ABS light flashing. any ideas?

hi

now have my abs light flashing. unfortunately i cant do a free scan because i dont have it.

any suggestions?

i did replace the off side rear abs sensor about a month ago to clear the abs light that was permanantly on. that worked out ok. i know it was that beacuse mattys told me in bromsgrove when they did a free scan.

this is a different fault though.

ive checked the fliud level. thats all ok.

i have had a guy changing some bushes. i wonder if he has disturbed something. no wires/plugs off that i can see tho

Check your brake light isn't staying on at times. My brake pedal somwtimes didn't fully return, leaving the brake light on with, I assumed the the ABS computer reading a brake problem, the ABS lights doing their flashing thing and finally the car shutting down. Fixed with a modified return spring mechanism. No more problems since.

youve just triggered something in my head,

ive just changed all the bulbs for neon bulbs which cost me a fortune! never the less it may be tryin to tell me i have no brake lights because obviously neons measure like diodes and dont give a resistance. therefore no load so it thinks both bulbs are gone.

ill check this tomorrow and let u know

I've heard of this exact problem from someone else (replacing the globes with ones with next to no resistance will cause a problem within the ABS circuit).

CAN BE OBTAINED FROM RS DIRT CHEAP IF ANYONE HAS THE PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE

Question for Danny:

Can you describe in more detail the return spring mechanism, as mine is doing exactly what you describe. When I lock the car, the stop lights very often stop in, and i have to put my foot under the pedal and lift it to turn them off!!

Hi Glyn,

When I was modifying the pedal spacing (see the post on shoes) I tack-welded a small bracket on the brake pedal arm with a hole. I used a simple light tension spring from the local hardware store. The other end of the spring was fastened to the steering column with a cable tie and by moving it up or down can adjust the tension on the switch.

Before I removed the pedal box (version 2) I fixed the spring to the pedal arm (version 1) with a couple of cable ties. But I couldn't find a position where it wasn't fouled by the rotating steering uni-joint. You could try this method but use a wire about 15cms long as a link that may clear the uni and then connects to a spring running alongside and fastened higher up the column. My recommendation would be version 2 and do the pedal spacing at the same time.
