Front Windscreen

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Got the esprit out of the garage today to do some work on it and notice a 12inch crack in the front screen. Great  .

Does anyone have any recommendations for changing the front screen on a "G" car. I hear that it isn't straight forward.

Where are you based Andy.

Your windowscreen should be covered on your insurance. I have spoken to a fe people about doing my screen and they never seem that put of. They moan a bit, proberbly because it isn't a 5 minute job but they all seemed willing enough.

I have someone coming to do all my windows as soon as I sort the trim out.

Hi Ajay

Changing the screen should not be to much trouble its the getting the trim bits of that go around the screen that's the problem they are fitted in such a way that its next to impossible to get them of without damaging them, which means that they may have to be replaced as well

Thanks

I am based in portsmouth, I will be phoning around this week to see if anynoe can do it!

I have heard that screens are a bit difficult to get hold of and that the fitters have a few problems with the interior trim. (not sure if this is true).

I am not too worried about the chrome trim, thinking about changing it for the Stevens black trim (no other chrome on the car) Does anyone know if it fits?

On a plus note I got the last piece of the chargecooler jigsaw today so quite happy. Now I just have to find the time!!!.

the screen on my S3 cracked and National windscreens changed mine.

Did a brilliant job, took a great deal of car over the job. Very pleased.

Than an accident at school involving a student who smashed my new screen! (an accident!!!!). I had changed insurance companies (to classicline) and I now had to use RAC autowindscreens. They did a poor job, they even refitted the wiper incorrecly and it fell off the first time I used them!!.

Try and be there whilst they fit it would be my advice.

Troy, FWIW, I like you thought of going down the balck trim route, but I'm glad that I decided on chrome. It takes a lot of fitting, but in my opinion it keeps the car in the period it was made.

To be honest Glyn I just can't locate enough trim to do both the front and rear screen. Lotus have stoped making it now and there just dowsn't seem ro be any out there.

I have spoken to someone about having it made but I need to order about 10 sets before he will do it. He was talking about making it out of Stainless Steel. It would be made on a computer controled machine. He said it would not have the ridges inside but would look the same from the outside. T be honest it is starting to enoy the hell out of me.

I know the horizontal pieces are obsolete. Are the side pieces also.

I made my horizontal pieces from the vertical ones, with a fine joining line in the centre of each length.

Unless I point it out no-one ever notices.

I can understand it annoying you, it did the same to me.

I wonder what would happen if someone were to claim on their windscreen insurance regarding these pieces and them having to be custom made?

Keep looking forward

Glyn
