BBS wheels

Recommended Posts

If you've got BBS silver and gold wheels, here's a couple of tips I've found over the years of ownership. Especially in a British climate, or anywhere likely to have rain I guess ;-)

I stress this is only good for shiney silver - I've seen one or two BBS which have matt silver - Don't do this if your's aren't shiney.

After a good wash and rinse, and on a cloudy day (sorry, Californians!), use silver cleaner (called silvo in the UK). It's got a soft wirey pink cloth inside, soaked in gunk. Rub it in the direction of the wheel and DO NOT touch the gold bits. It's hard work and you need to throw away a lot of cloth as you go. The cloth will ooze grey muck, which is the road-cr@p on your wheels. Then rub off with a dry lint-free cloth (I use Halford's pack of 20). Then the final trick is to use car-wax, a good quality one. I use Simoniz blue diamond. All over the silver and gold. Let it dry then buff.

That way the wax protects your wheels from the elements. I probably do mine once every year or two, but then it doesn't see much rain.

Is that all obvious? do you already do this?

yours look great... mine are matte though :(

Any tricks for cleaning the spokes? It's hard to get friends to help you wash your car when they know they'll have to take a toothbrush to each wheel for about 2 hours ;)

Pas tour wheels look stunning. I'll keep those tips in mind when I get my rims polished.

I'm still trying to decide at the moment what colour to have my hubs done. I had originaly planed for gold hubs and gold graphics. But am getting very tempted to go gunmetal/dark grey on the hubs with dark grey graphics. Must admit I'm not sure what to do at them moment.

Interesting point, I would be eager to see the gunmetal... ;)

Just my 2 ct.

No matter which stuff everybody is using, creating a mirror shine as can be seen on the picture is very hard work! Great job, Pas! :(

  • 1 month later...

The previous owner of my HC had the wheels mirror polished but I drove for about 1 mile on wet roads during winter (with salt) and then was away for 3 weeks and didn't get a chance to clean them. They are still okay but aren't their best. Most products say "not for mirror polish". Any suggestions to get them to their previous glory (or is it worth starting again - eeek  )?

Getting salt onto polished aluminium is not good(and not washing it off )It will corrode and pit the surface somthing rotton. You will have to re-do them or get a drill mounted polishing mop and give them a good seeing too(using Autosol)

Troy - Just caught up again on your restoration and have just seen the post-respray pics......

AWESOME! I *love* the colour - nods back to the Bond Turbo but has a much more contemporary feel.

As for Decals..... Do what I did..... DON'T!

They are god awful 70's things that cheapen and date a superb car! You are already non 'standard' and as a result have an amazing paintjob, why interrupt all that glorious paintwork with nasty 70's stickers?!

Go faster stripes on a supercar... hmmmmmmm

Hope you're not putting that nasty panel-wart of an aerial back on too! :)

I've had clear S4 side repeaters put on as well, instead of the standard, horrible, huge great orange house bricks.... The S4 ones are a Renault 5 part - Tho on your paintwork, standard orange indicators will look better than clear.....

Errr those look much the same as were on mine - the mid-sized ones with two tiny pinstripe go faster stripes....

I still say "don't!"

(I also appear to have mislaid a few other standard features!)

Sorry guys I haven't been able to get on here much lately.

Here's a quick update.

The glass is now fitted all baring the front screen which I have just read in my email inbox will be ready to be delivered on Monday. As I have been having so much trouble with the window trims the guy who came round to fit them showed me their OEM trim. It is a rubbertrim that fits to the edge of the glass. I quite liked it so it is now on and looking quite nice. I ditched the capping rail trim and put on a black rubber u trim to match the rear window and I'm very happy with the result.

I am going to pick up my new (read used but running) High Compression engine on Sunday and I have just managed to get a second hand gearbox with a garantee which should be sent next week. I will be ordering a full stainless steel exhust and manifold on Monday along with some other bits.

My wheels should be going in to be reconditioned towards the end of next week. I am having the rim polished and the hub sprayed Gunmetal.

As for the graphics I have done them on the PC and will be taking them to get cut very soon maybe in the morning (Saturday). I am not sure if I'll use them or not but as they are only vinyle I can easily remove them if I don't like them. I am having them cut out of a Gunmetal Vinyle to match the wheels. And no the bloody wart is not going back on :)

I know there is a lot more but who has got time to read it all

Make sure you wax them (I use Simoniz blue diamond). It takes a while for the wax to dry off, but then buffing will leave a film of wax to protect the ally. Not really salt protection, but at least road dirt and water stains.

Well I have just dropped my wheels of to get refurbed. I jave gone for the polished rim and Graphite hub. They should be ready to pic up the later part of the week. I must admit I can't wait to see what they look like

I'll post some pics as soon as they are done.
