camcover crinkle paint

I'm on a roll here with asking not highly technical questions, so why not keep going.

My exhaust camshaft cover paint is flaking badly. Anybody know where to source the red camcover paint used on the Lotii?

www.frost.co.uk sell a red wrinkle paint. The effect is similar but no idea whether the colour is correct!

Search for wrinkle, it comes up with black, then hit more info and there is a red further down the page...

If you go for it, let us know how it works out!

It's not availible anymore. Use any wrinkle paint that has red and yellow colours in the range. The Lotus is a more sunburnt orange bordering on red than bright red. I know that this is what my Lotus Specialist has to do.

I was going to suggest frost but steve beat me to it.

Sadly there does not appear to be a crinkle in the orange/red color. My mechanic spent a few days matching the color with the local powder coater and can get all the pieces powder coated. You lose the crinkle the but the color looks amazing, and of course it is durable. Let me know if you want his info.

Hi

I have the same problem no Lotus red available.

Today I have repainted my camshaft covers. Here is the result.

The color is not perfect so I'm gonna leave it only until I find something better.post-495-1121967594.jpg

Got my Esprit back from Esprit Engineering with nicely refurbished cam covers. My engine hasn't looked like this for 21 years!

Also got a nice sounding stainless steel Janspeed exhaust box fitted :).

I found this 'How To Guide' for painting Cam Covers when I was Googleing about. It's on a Honda Forum and is pretty informative:

Clicky

I followed the steps and mine came out rather nicely. I didn't sand the detailing after painting I just carefully wiped the paint off with a paper towel and some lacquer thinner whilst the paint was still wet.

Black with the silver (i.e. aluminium) writing was the original design of the 907 engines.

I think the red came in with the redesigned cam covers. You can see the difference in design in the photos above.

hi, just a thought, have you tried somewhere like B&Q, they do special finishes in a tin ,marble ,stone crinkle, all sorts of effects- then just have a aerosol mixed in red to topcoat at a paintshop?they would get the colour bang on, crinckle could be any colour, and would stop on if prepared right-- could be a quick easy fix, the right red or orange is not a problem, worth a try, some craft shops may do it aswell, cheers, steve

I think the redseign cam covers were black to start. I think Im right in saying they went orangey red for the HC engine post 87.

Buddsy

That's certainly the case with the Exel where the HC engines had red cam covers, whilst the standard ones didn't.

Regards

Mat

Rover Vermilion is a perfect match, you can always overspray the red crinkle with it.
