Europa Appreciation thread

First Lotus I ever saw was a piece of sh!t blue Europa on the way back from a hospital somewhere... Damn it was ugly.

Looked up pictures of nice ones, turned out they're supposed to be ugly. They've grown on me though. I wish I'd picked one up back a few years ago back when I saw them on ebay for like 2000 bucks for a complete beater.

I'm pretty much split between the S1 and the Special for which one was least ugly though... I hate how the ones with the jacked up suspensions and upturned front ends look, but the Special at least looks better than the S2.

Any owners here? I'm getting tempted to start another project:D Maybe find a Europa or Elan+2

a few nice ones on ebay

Just don't get one in the JPS colors - looks more like a hearse!

Check out http://www.banks-europa.co.uk as well, I think they sell everything to make a 47R replica as well as everything else Europa

personally, I like more the Elan +2, much more elegant proportions, aerodynamic and 4 seats. My next project! (once I get the Esprit sorted...)

gkn-chassis.jpg Heres a shot of the 47D chassis/ engine transaxle(being restored) This car was the Esprits father!

whoa... a lot of people forget the Esprit was built on basically the same chassis... the Esprit's longer isn't it? Nice engine

Interesting stuff!

Though the type 62 looks a little off IMO... they didn't curve the front fenders enough, and the rears just look off... but they still look decent. The type 47s look better... it's a wonder how much better these cars look when the rear wheelwells are opened up.

There's one in the bodywork section that looks like a cross between an esprit and a maserati merak:D Can't say it's to my taste but it is impressive and it doesn't look completely bad

Actually ... they both look like Europas I have had. Owned a '71 in yellow but it had the standard pressed wheels and then a '74 4-speed in that same ugly "Colonial Taxi" green.

I like the S2 best. The upturned suspension means that the owner did not reverse the front lower arms which is what Lotus did to get them in US due to headlamp height regulations. Most were flipped back later by their owners.

However, the S1 interior with "pop out" seats cushions are neat but not their pop out plastic plexiglass side windows.

Here's a Murek I saw in Le Mans at the weekend.

Nice color. The guy who sold me my S4s had a red one in his garage that was owned by his room mate.

Meraks and Boras warrant an appreciation thread of their own :P Giugiaro had a way with supercars in that era... Our cars, the Maseratis, the Beemer M1...

The S1 did definitely have the best interior IMO.

Doesn't the Merak have the Citroen SM gearbox like a G-car?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I believe it does... it shares the dashboard too I know.

gs_2.jpg Slade found an interesting car here (undergoing restoration) It was designed by William Towns (designer of Aston DBS, Lagonda(one of my faves) and Bulldog) and based on a Europa chassis and lower body structure. It was ultimately rejected by Mr.Chapman, but this is the car that was intended to be the Esprit.
