High idle and chuffing noise

Did you intend to post a 1-second movie?  Would love to hear more of that, but what little is there sounds mechanical (pulleys?).  Need lots more info - any history/recent work?  You can try to isolate the noise, carefully,  with a piece of hose.

British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland.  And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden.

Thanks for this. I'll try to get a longer recording but this was all I was allowed to upload onto the forum.

Perhaps an exhaust manifold stud has backed out?  It happens.

I'll have a look at that. I originally thought it might be a valve burnt, but the compression tests ok.

Has the car had a flat battery at any point ? As this may need a reset and relearn if it has.

what is the Tps voltage saying on the other tab ?

are you sure the iac valve is fitted tightly and correctly ? I'm puzzled over the chuffing noise. Sounds to me like somethings not tight somewhere

MAP first; looks like a vacuum hose may be adrift.

Nice and easy to test as well ! Any hissing in the cabin areas

Only here once

I'm also thinking a vacuum hose or one of the lines that connect to the intake manifold, like the MAP sensor, Fuel Pressure regulator Tee, or Charcoal canister...

But you didn't mention what Esprit model you have....??

Sorry I should have said - it's an Turbo SE 1990. I inherited it from my brother about 3 years ago. Initially it ran really rough with not much power and the Turbo working hard. This turned out to be 1 dead and 1 intermittent injector. I managed to get new ones from America and the car then ran better.  General driving was ok but acceleration over 4000 rpm resulted in misfires but it was usable.

It was running ok like this until it had some new plugs and a wheel bearing fitted. Soon after the engine check light came on and the car idled high. Luckily this was only a mile or so from home so hasn't run like this for long.   It's been like this since May but I met Dave (who has a black SE turbo) and this inspired me to have another go at it. He put me in touch with this forum.

The Cat, BPV and throttle jack are all missing as well.

I have now had a look at the IAC and it was loose. I took it out and the plunger doesn't move. Should it?

MAP elbow at Sensor end was badly perished - at least the designers made it easily accessible ; ). After I taped this up, reset the IAC and idle speed it ran a bit better but still at 1400 rpm.

Decided to check the IAC again an noticed that injector No 1 was a bit wobbly. Further investigation found that it has fallen apart - hence chuffing noise near the IAC.

Should I try to find the bits in the inlet manifold?

Can anyone recommend decent injectors?

Something is missing on one injector. Only place it can go is into the inlet manifold. Check if the piece is still in the manifold fitting.

I've checked out the Manifold, Valves and Cylinders with an inspection camera - it looks like the bits have already passed through.

Jeremy, I bought a set from WC Engineering for my SE. The writeup sounds good, but I can't say either way if the injectors were better than the old ones (I was doing too many other things to the car at the time).

Thanks for this Ian,  These do look better than the Five-O ones which I bought.  I have managed to track down a few original injectors so hope these will prove to be OK.
