More electrical problems:(

Question

Hi everyone.

Im still having trouble after number 5 auto electrician walked off the job and told me not to come back with the S2 esprit.

Ive replaced (& checked) the temp/otter switch, thermostat, relays checked all the wiring ,fitted new radiator fans, replaced the antifreeze and cleared all air locks.

The fans still wont cut in ????????

Im having to use a switch inside the car at the moment.

Any ideas what ive missed?????

Ive had the car 5 years now driven it approx 30 miles and had 3 engine rebuilds in this time.

If it isnt repaired before august it is going to be off road for another 3 years as im going back to the middle east to pay for it.I might send it to Lotus for a full rebuild after that as its probaly going to be cheaper than what ive already spent on it.

Hi Mike

Are you shore you are not expecting the fans to cut in before the car gets to the temperature that it should be for them to work ?

If you take of the wires to the otter switch and bridge them do the fans come on if they do then all the wiring should be ok and it must be the otter switch (if the temperature is high enough to work it, and its not cut in) .

Also have you checked to see if your thermostat is opening ok if your problem is constant over heating.?

On my S2, the temperature gauge gets pretty well round to the high limit before the fans switch on, and that's with a new switch. Make sure you are letting the engine get hot enough.

Yes the fans cut in when i cross them at the switch . the temp gauge goes off the end of the scale.

Tried and tested several thermostats (5 of them)

Ive had the volt mtr on the otter switch (3 of them)and theywork.

?????????????????????????

Mike

You say the gauge go's of the scale but is the water getting hot enough for the fans to kick in (ie is the gauge working ok ?) this is all that I can think of because if the otter switch is ok and the fans work when bridged then there should not be a problem.

When the temperature gauge goes off the scale, there should be coolant coming out of the overflow. If this isn't happening, it could well be the gauge that's at fault.

If you connect the two otter switch wires together and the fans kick in, the switch is probably the wrong one for your car. What colour code is it? There are 3 otter switches with different specs to switch fans on at higher or lower temps. I am betting its a green spot for cold climates. A blue spot opens at a lower temp(for hotter climates) Blue on 82 degrees off 72 degrees A079M6200F (Red?) on 86 degrees off 76 degrees Green on 92 degrees off 82 degrees :D
