Instead of using the 1n4001 which is only rated for 1A use the 1N5401 which is rated for 3A

Well I'm dragging myself into the '90s with some LED stop tail bulbs so I think the 1n4001 should still work for me.

Did I miss a pic of your lights?? I assume you've had them personally approved by Ms Roberts otherwise it's not an officially endorsed conversion...

Ms Roberts will have to wait. Just got all the new bits out to do this and the eBay Muppets have sent the wrong LED bulbs. Ordered twin contact stop tails, received single contact bulbs. Only just noticed. 

 

I assume this won't work even temporarily with normal filament bulbs? If I don't use the fogs?

No - if you have 1n4001 diodes you'll blow them up !! That's why I bought the 1n5401 - they work with either.

Occurred to me that if I don't wire the fogs in for now, I can convert the stop tails and use normal filament bulbs. Then complete the job/connect the fog wire and diode next week when the right LEDs arrive?

In better news my bulb holders (from Autobulbs Direct) fit a treat, no O ring required

Julia showed up to approve the mod so here's photo proof. She would have shown far more but she was unhappy that the fogs don't work yet so it's just a bit of leg. Anyway, at least you know she was there...

I'll sort the fogs next week when the Jim Henson Bulb Co. send me the right LEDs. Not that I ever use them, but I guess the MOT guy will expect them to work.

My loom wiring was completely different colours to @swindon_alan 's diagram and the workshop manual but easy enough to fathom out. Bonus that the lamp loom itself unplugs so you can do all the soldering on the bench.

Very happy with it. Always planned to do the same on my Excel but never got round to it.

As I've got to wait for my bulbs I've decided to go the 1N5401 3A diode route (thanks Freek), just in case whoever owns the car after my demise decides to unknowingly put filament bulbs in. Wouldn't want the car to end up on fire... Ten diodes for £1.49. Nice.

My 1N5401 3A diodes arrived this morning. As I was opening them I had that "duh!" moment. I had bought ten 1N4001 1As, all I had to do was to wire three in parallel each side to achieve the same thing. Hey ho...

My (correct) LED bulbs arrived today so I'll get busy with stage 2 on Saturday. Bonus is they didn't ask for the single contact LEDs back so I'll upgrade to LED reversing lamps while I'm in there 

Might be a numpty question but is there a right and wrong way round to wire in the diodes?

Yeah - they only go one way round.......

the grey bar on the diode is the liney bit of the diode on Alan's picture
