Replacement dash speakers?

Recommended Posts

In messing around and trying to get things sorted with the 85 turbo I noticed that one of the dash speakers is blowed. Before I start poking around and pulling a part the dash.

Any one done a speaker replacement of upgrade?

How did it go?

Hi i decided it was not worth doing as it would be a real pain in the arse so went the upgrade route by installing custom pods ontop of the sills just inside the doors and upgrading the rear speakers. This with a good quality head unit has resulted in excellent sound quality.

If you have a look on my LEW owners page i think there is a pic in there somewhere (remember to roll over images)

Tried it once and gave up! The R/H one came out relitively easy , but the L/H I couldnt get past the gauge pod(it has to come out) or you could take the windscreen out! Read once about someone who had gotten his dash speakers out from underneath the dash with a philips screwdriver with a flexible drive. On my car I think the speakers were moulded in to the plastic surround so that method wont work on some cars ;)

Mine are just dropped into the round holes in the dash, no screws! ;)

Very easy to remove when you want to replace the antenna ;)

My stereo installation was made by car-audio specialist (by previous owner). The installation is fine but there is suspect that they loosed the heater's vacuum pipe ;)

Those window speakers might be very tricky to install properly. Only way to do it is to take the window out ;)

Mine were replaced by Esprit Engineering. He didn't remove the windscreen or the binnacle but it was a pug of a job! I bought some 4" Pioneer (evolution series - the yellow ones) speakers matched with a shiny new Pioneer MP3 playing head unit that sounds the absolute bees knees! It is even loud and clear at 100+mph. I work with audio so am very sensitive to a decent stereo. While it's lacking in anything real below about 150Hz it still has a kick and what is there is clear and undistorted.

:) Hi Ive put speakers on cut to size boards covered in black fabric that I have mounted at a 45 degree ish angle under the front of the seats like this (\) hidden away, easy to unplug for carpet cleaning, great sound and of course the Mrs likes it when I turn the volume up!!

Hi Robert.....

Any chance of a picture of that? What size speakers did you use?

I had no end of trouble trying to sort out speekers for my S3. In the end I customised the door panels. I added a piece of 18mm MDF to the bottom of the door that followed the contour of the armrest and faded away to nothing half way through the speaker. I managed to fit a 6 1/2" Infinity reference speaker in there. I am putting a 8" sub in behind the passsanger seat in the firewall.

I am mid process on my journey (stripping interior for full resto, wanted the "dated" stock grills to keep interior original looking). With binnacle out, front speakers spin right out. I measured the ID to be the OD of most 3.5" speakers. However, 99% of the speakers out there have tweeter protrustion and the stock grills are near flat. Found Infiniti Kappas with an integral collar to essentially make it a zero protrusion speaker. With a dental pic, I broke away the 3 metal tabs glued into the ID of the stock grill/collar that retains the old factory speakers. Washed the speaker grilles up, removed the old fabric and orderd black speaker grill fabric samples from speakerworks.com for $7. Infinitis were pricey for 3.5"s but keeps everything stock--caution though-these are 2 Ohm (WHY??) so its going to draw more amps (fade your system to the rear if u use these!)
