Hi All,

Since the bottom hose fell off my car on the way down to top gear I think I may have an airlock. In normal running conditions the temp is fine and runs at the normal level. However if I give the car a bit of a caning or hold a sustained speed on a private test track of over a ton the temp gauge goes shooting up. If I give it a sec it drops down again??

If it is a lock (I've tried bleeding from that little grub screw thing) what is the best method to clear it??

Cheers

try to bleeed it at the top of the rad. if that doesn't work, jack the rear of the car up and bleed it again using the screw near the thermostat. getting the last bit of air out of there is a real chore. it sounds like a radiator failure to me though...

Shouldn't be the rad as it is brand new 3 core jobby.

What does jacking the back end up do though??? Raise the bleed level??

Thanks for the advice though. Will give this a try at the weekend. It is a pain in the butt though. In town and normal running it is fine.

Would it be worth changing the thermostat at all??

I think the point of jacking up the rear is to help force the trapped air further up the system to the radiator cap. Air usually wants to rise in a liquid so jacking up the rear will help... At least that's my take on it.

Yep! jacking up the rear will help.

The most effective way without jacking the rear is to attach a small hose at the bleeder. The hose length is approx 2 to 3 Ft. Tie the end as high as you can. Start the car and open the bleed. I do this

to my mid engine toyota Mr2 turbo. Works all the time. No vapor lock!

Hi Alan - long time no see, hope you are well...

Just to clarify - you habe bled both of the bleed points? Near side top of rad, and top hose in engine bay?

Most of my air came from the radiator, with the final bits coming from the top hose engine bay.

Just a thought, but is the aux belt in good condition and the tensioner working OK, it might be your water pump belt slipping??

Thanks for that guys,

Hi Glyn all is well. I see the new beast now lives then??

hmmm I'd forgot about the radiator bleed so I'll give that a try first then jack the back end up as high as poss and do the other bleed screw.

I guess this is the fun of a mid engine.

AFIK the belt is fine but I'll give it a once over just to make sure.

Well finally got round to doing this job.

How much air came out of the front!!!!!

I was shocked. I even managed to top the rad up from the bleed plug before I started.

Once the rad was bled up I got nothing out of the rear bleed screw. (had the car as high as my jack and axle stands would allow.

Just need to test it now.

Thanks for all the advice.
