  1. Just to echo what Troy has said - The N/A & Turbo bell housings are different but they are a matched part i.e. they have corresponding numbers printed on them and the box, so I guess its not a good idea to mix and match gearboxes/bellhousings from different boxes! cheers Steve 84 Turbo
  2. Thanks for the reply guys. I had not checked the price and see that Jeff paid
  3. Just taken my engine out today for essential winter maintenence and high on the list is petrol tank refurb. Has anyone got any experience of this process? http://www.fuel-tank-renu.co.uk/pages/tanks.html cheers Steve 84 Turbo
  4. If there is no grinding it is not hydraulic related, if there is grinding then it will be the hydraulics (or a combination of the 2 factors). As pointed out, that is not always the case in the forward gears due to syncromesh - they just tend to 'baulk' with bad hydraulics. Another simple test would be "can reverse be accessed with the engine switched off" yes=hydraulics no=adjustment. cheers Steve Just my opinion!
  5. Yes I have had this problem (twice) on my 84 turbo. I followed exactly the same steps as you, and still they only lasted 1 year. The earlier LC gaskets are a sort of 'paper'/metal hybrid which were uprated to the stainless steel pressings on later models. As the gaskets are interchangeable you haven't been sold LC gaskets in error? I will try the (expensive) stainless steel next time. cheers Steve
  6. As others suggest, my suspicion it will be your crossgate cable going out of adjustment due to linkage wear. If its the same as the S3 turbo you adjust the crossgate cable, which you will see attached to the gearbox, by disconnecting a clevis pin and rotating the cable end. Mine, presumably through linkage wear, is ultrasensitive to adjustment (i.e if you over adjust for reverse, you will not get 1st - and visa versa). There is only about 1 full turn between these 2 conditions. I would simply have a fiddle with that adjustment (I can remember whether it is screwed 'in' or 'out' for reverse. You will need to remove the clevis pin, simply try 1/2 turn at a time and see if you can find reverse. NB I have also seen the crossgate adjustment so badly adjusted that you no longer lift the gearstick for reverse, make sure your box is not adjusted so. (you do lift the lever for reverse dont you!!!). Good luck cheers Steve
  7. Thanks for the advice Dave. I think I'll give him a call. I live in Bolton and my car is not for sale! Not me in New Brighton. Mine is a white 84 turbo with black decals. Its possible you may have seen it a PNM when I have been collecting parts from time to time? cheers Steve
  8. Its time for a winter transmission rebuild on my 84 turbo. It hasn't failed, its simply developed a bearing whine in 4th & 5th. If Harry Martens lived down the road I would take it there. However Alan Voigts does live close! and he used to do a lot of Lotus gearboxes and I believe is still pretty active with Elan transmissions. Anyway, my question - Has anyone used Alan Voigts for work on a Citreon box recently (or in the past) and if so, was the experience positive? thanks in advance Steve 84 turbo
  9. Seriously worn valve guides will generally smoke on overun. e.g. on a downhill stretch of road with the throttles closed - presumably due to the increased suction at the guide. As Molemot hints, it could simply be a rich mixture at idle wetting your plugs. If the engine is recently rebuilt and is running OK, I would simply put another 1000 miles on the clock and review the situation. Steve 84 turbo.
  10. Correct, its the lower plug. However, certainly on my S3 Tubo, the easiest way to fill the Gbox is via the big rubber inspection plug under the boot carpet. There is a filler plug underneath. cheers Steve 84 turbo
  11. Leaking exhaust manifold gaskets can sound pretty similar to tappets on this motor. Might be worth checking before pulling it apart! cheers Steve 84 Turbo
  12. From memory, the sequence described sounds correct and certainly has worked fine for me. IIRC the angle guage I bought only cost
  13. Thing on wheel arch is rev limiter - the car will run without this plugged in. You can check the resistance of the pickup in the distributor with a simple multimeter. (its simply a coil of wire energised by a magnetised rotor) For cars with a mechanical advance/retard on dizzy these are notorious for breaking the wires internally, this can be repaired by soldering a new pair of 'tails'. The disassembled constant energy module contains an amplfier that is still available from Partco (or it was last year cos I bought one for
  14. Are you 100% certain the liners and block are completely free of all old sealant? In my experience I have found the iron liners to be a clearance/slip fit - i.e. once they are centralised in the block, they will simply drop into place with a distinct metallic 'clang'. You will not able to acurately check nip until you can reliably 'seat' the liners - If you do have an 'interference' fit, I would firmly pull them into place using a similar tool to a liner extractor. (or possibly try warming the block?). I have then adjusted nip by testing each liner in one single bore to grade them from smallest to tallest, then repeat the process with one of the liners in each bore in the block to grade each bore from lowest to highest nip - Then I arrange the tallest liner in the deepest bore, and so on and so forth - This made a significant difference to simply arranging the liners in a random fashion. Also, speak to one of the specialists to obtain the liner sealant, Hylomar is not the best option these days. I also recall that the newer 'Goetze' head gasket is more forgiving than the old version, again speak to the person you are getting your parts from. cheers Steve 84 Turbo.
  15. I dont know what tyres you are using, but the rear P600's on mine were awful when they were new - wandering all over the place - frightening on very high speed curves. took maybe 2-300 miles before they were bedded in - now I quite like them! cheers Steve 84 turbo
  16. Hmmmm - That sounds like me! - On my weekly trip from manchester to N yorks. However are you sure it was 'C' reg? My plate is KDZ 307. It will be there gain tomorrow! cheers Steve 84 White S3 Turbo Black Decals
  17. Hi I have a 'new' misfire that is not the standard idle/progression to mains at 3000RPM. The misfire feels electrical and is accompanied by the rev counter fluctuating. N.B. Disconnecting the rev counter does not cure the problem. I have substituted coil, ignition amplifier, leads and plugs but no change. I therefore suspect the ignition 'pick up' in the distributor - even though this reads the correct Ohms and seems fine if heat it up and 'wiggle' the leads. (As it does not have vacuum advance, it has not suffered from the internal broken wire syndrome). Few Questions - Has anyone had a similar problem - especially the rev counter going mad, was it the pickup? Anyone know the lucas part number of the pickup? or any 'ordinary' cars that used the same part, that could easily be found in scrapyard? If anyone in UK has a spare, I may be interested to buy or borrow! cheers Steve
