Getrag 5 Speed - which one?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am about to pull the trigger on a 5 Speed getrag for my 504. The seller has 2 options, see photos below. It will also come with a BMW bellhousing for what it's worth.

The propshaft ends are the same with a 3 bolt flange which I will need to adapt. What I am wondering about is the different input shafts and which one will give me less hassles. They seem to be different lengths and diameters and also have different clutch collar dimensions. Any ideas if any which would be more appropriate or does it not really matter (as in neither will work at all as is)? Thanks in advance.

Well, my car is on the ramp at the moment so I was able to check out some details. My Getrag is a 262. The number "262.0.510.20" is stamped on the side next the bell housing a bit below the reverse switch.

It looks like the smaller of the 2 in your photo. This was a tight fit in my Eclat so I cant imagine that the larger box will fit in yours.

I think I used an Eclat Excel bell housing. (An early Excel).

I had to move the engine forward about 25mm too, to get the anti vibration weight to fit, even after I cut its corners to fit into the chassis

All Getrag "265"'s will bear the stamp "262" on the side of the main casing. They are modular gearboxes with the 4 speed variant being the 262. To create the 5 speed 265 gearbox, Getrag bolted on an extra casing containing the 5th gear onto the end of the existing 4 speed 262. The part number you are seeing on the side of your 265 Getrag is the casting number of the main section of the gearbox, stamped 262 because that part is common between 262 and 265.

A 265 being a 262 with an extra casing bolted on the end.

2 sections+bellhousing = 262 4 speed

3 sections+ bellhousing = 265 5 speed

It is very easy for the uninitiated to buy a 262 thinking its a 265....ask me how I know...

🙂
