Oil Pressure

Recommended Posts

On my 96 S4 the oil pressure starts of fine but then drops to fairly low once the engine's warmed up.

Now I know that the oil pressure sender is inherently a bit dodgey on these but that wouldn't cause this affect would it?

Is it time for a sump off and oil pump check?

the specifications have been quoted several times, the oil pump is actually on the upper part of the engine under the intake throttle bodies so removing the sump will only get you to the bottom end of the motor and the pickup tube. The oil pump is run by the third visible "cam" pulley beside the alternator. This problem generally arises due to oil thinning out once warm, but as long as you are using a good quality oil and the pressure goes up on revs while driving you should be fine. The cars are notorious for this behaviour. I believe the specification is 3.5bar or so when driving over 3Krpm
