Good morning everyone, I am new to the Lotus world having recently purchased a 1992 Esprit. It has developed an oil leak that I hope to repair over the winter. Perhaps some members have encountered this and can provide some guidance please. I flew to Newfoundland, Canada to inspect and buy this beautiful car, then drove it 1,000 trouble free kms in the next two days. I left it with a transport company and flew home to Alberta, Canada. When it arrived a few weeks later it was driven into my garage. It ran for about 80-90 seconds but curiously, the coolant light was on and there was smoke coming out of the engine compartment. Oil pressure was good, check engine light was on…

Finally got a little time today to dig into my 88 Turbo and chase the no spark issue. For the love of god, how do you get at the freaking distributor on a 910 with the Bosch K-Jetronic? I pulled the intake plenum cover, but my fat hands still can't get in there. Do I have no choice but to pull the whole intake plenum? Or is there some trick I'm missing? I can't even really see the thing to assess what I'm getting myself into. I've looked for info online on pulling the plenum and found very little. Since I'm totally new to this engine I'd love to find a tutorial or something rather than just dive in with the service notes and fingers crossed.

I recently acquired a beautiful 188 Esprit Turbo 40th Anniversary Edition. Car was running great. Was at Road Atlanta last weekend to pick it up and it ran fine around the infield roads on Friday evening. Ran it around the infield roads again Saturday morning for a few minutes to get comfortable with that car. Ran fine, but did stumble a couple of times briefly climbing up the hill to go back into the pro pits. I sat and idled it for a bout 10 minutes or so and drove around the paddock without issues. Then I went out on track for a couple of parade laps, just for fun. Ran like a charm the first lap, but coming up the hill through the esses it stumbled again. Then it just …

Everyone, as the title already states, it is possibly time to replace the stock injectors on my S300. Some stuttering/misfire happens occasionally under heavy load (and under regular driving too, but more sparingly), and after checking coils, sparks, etc. my attention is going towards the fuel system. Filter is new, so I suspect injectors/pump, anything else I should look at? I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I am seeking some words of wisdom before I go ahead. If it's indeed time to let the old injectors go, are there any options out there that are proven to work very well, keeping the original ECU in place? Thanks in advance...

It's time for me to tackle one of the jobs on the Esprit that I've dreaded the most - replacing the timing belt. I need to remove the water pump as it looks like the seal at the bearings is goosed. The oil pump pulley needs to be moved a little for access to a bolt for the water pump which in turn means mucking about with the timing belt. As the timing belt hasn't been replaced in over 7 years (car has been stuck in my garage all that time) it needs replacing. So an opportunity to tackle both jobs . All belts and the cam belts tensioner's bearing will be replaced while I'm at it. I've read many threads on the forum and studied the service notes, but all nugge…

Has anyone experienced this error code on their Esprit? Symptom is after starting, idles high, drops to 1200-1400RPM, then sputters and eventually stalls. Did this to me while driving for 10 minutes or so. Read code as DTC-42 : Ignition bypass Circuit error. I thought about replacing the IAC and TPS since both could cause this condition, but error code tells me that it may be ECM related. Any thoughts from experience out there? Thanks. Tom S. Hi all, the wires YR and PG from the flywheel sensor to the direct ignition module don’t seem to be a twisted pair as in section ML sheet 3. Comments please.

I am thinking of fitting vernier cam pulleys to my S4. Reading about the improved low end performance has convinced me that I should. I could get the green dot pulleys and easily install them but the vernier adjustable pulleys come as a pair and are not much more expensive. However if I'm to install these pulleys I need someone to walk me through the setting up process with the occasional picture. Have all the required tools for the job just lacking the guidance for the set up. Thanks Wayne

Engine check light has come on and noticed that water temp has dropped from 70 to 35 !!! stopped the car went for a coffee and on return started car and of course no engine check light. nothing obvious to see, no leaks and everthing seems to work as normal. Car drives fine. What do the experts on here think, serious or will it get me home (500 miles)

I have replaced the Bosch k-jetronic in my 1988 turbo with a ME221 ECU. The car runs good but I have caused myself some grief with the alternator. In my haste to remove unused wiring to neaten up the install I have inadvertently removed the brown/yellow wire to the alternator. Now I can't seem to work out how it plugs back into the loom. The ignition light is off on the dash and the alternator is not charging the battery. According to the wiring diagram I would expect to see a brown/yellow wire from the loom coming into the engine bay via one of these plugs. However, I do not see such a wire, I do have the wire from the alternator to what I believe went into the roun…

Hi Had been sitting for about 2 months ..... Battery got quite flat but not completely dead. Runs perfectly for about 10 minutes and then runs rough , stalls and if restarted while hot idles rough and stalls. No CEL / No battery light Leave it to cool and it great again for 10 minutes...... Is not overheating - 80-85C I am wondering about coils / leads / IAC valve....Something is playing up when hot...can a fuel pump issue do this despite being able to maintain high revs first 10 minutes? How can I check what the IAC should be doing with freescan ? Anything else to check? I did put 100 octane in it about 6 months ago....I know tha…

Not sure if this is the correct section, mods please move if wrong. My car comes with the electric fuel filler flap release system. Now my right side is working fine, but I am unable to open the left side. I understand that the release is controlled by solenoids, each to one side. There is supposed to be a fuel filler release switch, but I can't seem to find the location in my service notes. There are also very minimum information. Appreciate if someone with the electric fuel filler release car cans shed more information on the location of the solenoids, the relay switch, and generally how the system works. Also, is the switch under the steering …

Good Afternoon. Work has resumed on the engine install on my S4. A lot of the pipework on the car was either toast or replaced at some point with incorrect hoses. I am wanting to run the heater hose which mates to the cylinder head under the cams but unsure of the routing to avoid the many belts and pulleys. Also should this hose have an elbow on the end as mine is a straight hose (marked 'Ford' 🫣) Thanks in advance.

I had my 1989 Esprit Turbo S non-chargecooler Delco injection out for a 60 mile drive. Runs like a kitten and a lion when you call for it! 30 minutes after completing this pleasing drive, I went to start the car and it was not happy, acting like the coil(s) were heat soaked. Sputtering and not clearing out on multiple tries. The next day when cooled it started right up and behaved perfectly. Seems like classic electrical coil heat soak to me. Any words of wisdom before I purchase/replace both coils? Thank you

My 20,000 mile 1989 non-SE Esprit has a high idle condition which has gotten worse. It now idles around 2000 - 2200 RPM and may drop lower after warming up. It has always had a high idle near 1800 - 2000 RPM but would drop to a pleasant 800 or so by cycling the key after warming up. This issue seems to be getting worse. I just realized that the battery disconnect that I installed to avoid a dead battery after weeks/months of not using is likely causing the ECM to relearn every time I start it! Is this the case? Please advise on best steps to correct this annoying issue. Thank you I suppose I should leave the battery connected and maintain a trickle charger on th…

Hi all, when putting my S4 engine back in ,how do I make sure the topside engine leg buffer washers AO85E6011F ,below the legs but above the rubber mountings ,settle in place ? Is it easy to reattach the water hoses at the front left hand side near the water pump? Any other tips. Thanks for any advice

Hi guys. Long time no see. The Esprit is out of storage after 10 years and started up just fine after some initial checks like if it had been parked yesterday. The issue I'm having though is 1. If I start it up. The ECM seems to go through some type of check where rpms go up to 1200rpm check engine light comes on then drops down past 1000rpm and engine cuts out. If I start driving immediately after starting CEL doesn't come on but it will die if left at idle after acceleration and coming to s stop. 2. When accelerating all seems fine if there is hardly any pressure on the gas pedal and it goes through gears. Turbo spools etc. If I …

Hi all, When changing the oil filter the workshop manual stresses not to disturb the adapter plate. When removing the adapter plate itself the manual makes no mention I can find of replacing the adapter seal ,although it has a part number A907E6167Z. I know a lot of us have oil leaks in this area, perhaps yours needs changing. Do you know if this seal is the same dimensions as the one on the end of the fuel filter
