Front camshaft oil seals / grub screws

While I am waiting for some waterpump parts from JAE over the pond, I decided to replace the front cam seals which seemed to be seeping slightly.

On closer inspection, oil is seeping not only from the seals but also from behind the bolt and washer that hold the pulley on to the camshaft.

When I removed the bolt, there was a thick film of silastic sealant between the camshaft and the bolt head (washer actually), and oil dripped out.

I have removed the grub screws and cleaned up the threads in the camshaft and the grub screw, and have used Loctite hydraulic seal to hopefully seal them and prevent the oil seeping through again.

Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Will I have solved it, or shall I use silicon sealant as I found it?

By the way the seals were a doddle to fit

Hi Glyn,

Silicon based gasket/sealant is the recognised way of sealing it, but you may well have an alternative solution that does the job with the hydraulic sealant. Fortunately its not too big a job to do again if you still have a leak.

Good luck

Thanks Malc,

I suppose I could always use the silicon sealant on the bolt threads or do you think it will affect the setting the correct torque?

Cheers,

Glyn
