Alternator replacement on and S4s Is it a job that an idiot can perform

Hi all,

Has anyone replaced an alternator on an S4s?

Whenever I start the simplest of jobs on any car I end up having probs. Like need a special sized spanner or, the engine needs to be removed to do the job etc...

So any help would be most welcome

with patience and long arms your sister could do the job

disconnect the battery before starting

once your started there's only 1 way to do it

disconnect 2 bolts and 3 wires

the only trouble you will have is getting the D**n thing out of there

it has to go upwards

Then getting enough tension on the belt is a royal pain too. It would help to be a professional weight lifter or be very adept with a pry bar.

Hi,

When I did my cambelt change I removed the alternator and found it to be very easy. If you remove the air filter box first you can remove the alternator going down under the plenum manifold and then up again through the hole that is now there with the air filter box removed. Just remember the main retaining bolt is a piece of rod with two nuts on it, not a bolt, so you may need to hold the rod one end to remove the other end nut being nylocks. It's the same for the starter, once the air filter box is off it's surprising what you can see, also the alternator, the cambelt is very visible.
