Ignition distributor map of a

Today we recorded the map as it is on my 88 turbo. We needed this as a reference because SHB662 did rebuild his distributor and wanted life measurements to compare.

Here they are:

Centrufugal advance:

First we disconnected al the (vacuum/turbo) tubes of the distributor. Then started to increase the rpm and measured the preignition whit digital timing equipment.

(10° Advace at 1000 rpm is the initial setting)

Vacuum advance:

Al tubes still disconnected. Then connect a tube at the turbo pressure side of the vacuum plenum of the distributor. At a steady rpm of 1000, we started to feed pressure to the vacuum advance and measured the preignition whit digital timing equipment.

My car is now 21 years old, so it can be that there is a deviation compared to new.

Thank you Peter that I could use your digital timing equipment for measuring also my ignition advance (see tables below).

In the Lotus service notes it is indicated that the centrifugal advance is 11° extra at 2000 rpm and only 8° extra at 5000 rpm. Initially I thought that this 8°at 5000 rpm was a mistake and I would expect rather 18° extra advance!!!? I still wonder how the centrifugal advance can decrease at a higher rpm? What special mechanism is inside the original distributor? anyway regarding to Peter's results it seems to be correct!

The distributor in my esprit is rebuild see my topic "distributor issuesof carb-turbo(1988)" posted at 25 oct 2008.

I wonder if I should take actions to improve the curve of my centrifugal advance?

I have the feeling that something is wrong with the attached spreadsheet,

here is the complete spreadsheet of the static, vacuum and centrifugal advance of my carIgnition advance tables.xls

I was also instantly confused by the centrifugal ignition advance decreasing with increasing RPM...doesn't make any sense to me.

I found this thread about your 88 car distributor research. Great job!

I have 88 turbo X-180 w/Bosch K-Jetronic injection, probably exactly like yours.

I'd like to re-curve my distributor. Could you please share with me your conclusions?

I was told that Mr. Gasket recurve kit 925A works pretty good on our cars?

Best Regards

John

I am moving on and in progress now of installing an Emerald K3 ECU.

I will soon replace the 'old' ignition with a DIS system.

After some succesfull testing I will install the fuel injection.

I've received a fueling and ignition map from Jan Pettersen (from Norway and forum member)

I'm in favor for the ECU because the springs and weights inside the distributor are more complicated than mapping.

I sent you a private reply that I didn't realize you were talking about an '88 vs the S1-S2 vintage cars of the '70s with your inquiry. The 925A kit is not applicable with a turbo and newer car.

Thanx,

Well, I don't even know what I have.

I'm trying to find out my dizzy' factory settings, but my copy of 88 Service Notes does not have timing information for Federal Bosch CIS equipped car. There is N/A and Turbo w/carbs setting information, but no CIS. Isn't it weird?

I assume, since 88 it was a change-over MY, Lotus people forgot to include this information.

Could someone look up this information for me in 86 or 87 HCI turbo Service Notes?

Thank you
