's cold innit...?

We've got no snow at the moment but the temperature still hasn't reached the dizzy heights of 0 for a few days now, and dipping to minus 10ish overnight. That's given us what I'm told is a hoar frost, which is pretty on the trees

The Backs along the river Cam in Cambridge looking towards the colleges was a spectacular sight today...an almost eerie sense of all that history being kept inside the ancient walls, safe from the cold outside.

Though this be madness yet there is method in it ( Polonius in William Shakespeare's Hamlet)

It's been raining here for days..... the field across the canal is beginning to look like a lake as the water can't drain away fast enough. The rain started just after the snow stopped; hate this dull grey soggy misery....at least the snow was pretty!!

Well it was 36 degress Celcius and 95% humidity today ( 100 F in old money ) and to me your minus 10 cold temperature looks very inviting. I have my flight booked for a New Year trip to Yorkshire, and am looking forward to a chilly respite from the very uncomfortable heat here in New South Wales. When you're cold it's easy to get warm, but when you're too warm it's not so easy to get cool. ( unless you stay indoors all day ) For 3/4 of the year it's perfect here, but having English Genes I don't really get on with the Australian summer weather. Roger's 'path to the beach' photo looks very nice, but it's too hot to actually walk down there at this time of year unless you're 18 and daft.

Those pictures look like Colorado in December, except this year we seem to be having different weather as it was 60 degrees Fahrenheit today!

How things change. Its so cold here they've closed our road the last three nights cos the frost has become so heavy on the trees that they're losing boughs and one went through a windscreen. Its not like its a minor road to close....its the A30! Anyway, I left for a trip to London at 7:30 this morning and drove through the various roadblocks with temp down at -8.. Then we came back in at 17:30 and the trees were brown and the grass was green. What happened to all the white stuff? Current temp is up at +2!

This morning the door lock on the Excel was frozen (warm key, move key gently back and forth), finally unlocked it, door stuck to door seal, prised open pulling on metal frame and GRP door, and the engine cranked quite slowly (oil must have been very thick and reduced chemical reaction in the battery reducing cranking current). Got over that, went along icy lane, should be fine after that as I'm then on a bus route, no. Just made it up the hill with vehicle speed dropping to almost standstill due to lack of grip.

That's the worst day so far, worse than days with lots of snow.
