a really fresh loookin suspension there , Alex

..on the engine pictures, not sure ..have done the inspection on the electric part of the starter motor as well -in order to the overall work there ?

..the rubber-plugs to the sparkplug cables, are those additionally sealed with 'clear silicone', or isn't there anything at all (see that there are mostly some small gabs there who are not fully sealed, same as for the sparkplug-cover sealings on the ends.

Maybe Brian can tell you something about the different pulleys for servo assist-steering & for the water pump.  Your steering pulley looks shiny as well, like that.

from the engineering point I would guess, the possible 'pulses' from the hydraulic acting against the beld drive and acting against you if you turn the wheel hard against the steering-limiter, and if yoou hold it there -maybee this is something a plasic pulley can't compensate over time ?!

Or it is simply a business reason, as for the sourcing of the different components -as you see the steering-pulley PDC is a ordinary one that you can finde on several other types of pump systems (Ford/ZF and so on)    ..same is for the basic layout of the pump housing.  Of course, Bibs mentioned once a 'special calibration' of the GM sourced *Saginav* pump, but the basic construction of the layout is at least the same as on other markets

While the engine is out - I have been told that one of the key things to replace is the loom - as they can cause all sorts of bother and can be a bugger to fit properly if the engine is in situ. Might be worth changing as you have worked so hard.

the wiring is covered mostly with some sort of black fabric

..this simply falls part over time, and exposes the single wires there to any type of stresses (heat, oil and so on)

..so if the plastic insulation on every cable gets brittle to and starts to crack it is most likely to see oxids building up there in the cable -with the typical results.

The positive thing is, the V8 wiring on the engine itself is not that much complicated, as the main part for the injectors, and temp sensors for example sits directly between both cylinder-banks. earth straps and generator and crank/cam sensor cables are good accesible as well  -the not so easy point with the 'engine in' is the oil-pressure switch there LH on the lower block

what a blummin day looking for more problems to solve and boy did i find some .

started trying to remove broken studs in the manifold one from the egr out put and one in the heat shield mounts

20130224_105912_zps1a914fd7.jpg

lots of stopping for re sharpening the drill bit and re oiling every bit

20130224_111031_zps8fbe1015.jpg

finally got the snapped but out and cleaned the area

20130224_111517_zpsb95d383f.jpg

bit of re threading for a new stud

then started to fit the manifold and realised how bad the mounts looked

20130216_172147_zps3bd5257d.jpg

so shot blasted the worst off

20130224_141305_zps47d70a4e.jpg

then hung to paint

20130224_140243_zpsae4adb49.jpg

20130224_140254_zps7175f16a.jpg

dryed and re fitted

20130224_153524_zps3a6b9c2d.jpg

then to the manifold all fitted up and noticed some of the studs seemed a little lose as i tightened

20130224_150943_zps6012a2f2.jpg

yes the bloody thing snapped fortunatly out the block so i used a stud extractor and removed it clean phew

thought id just check the rest as i remember in the history i have with the car i saw reciepts for head gaskets .

20130224_150953_zpsaf8f6701.jpg

done by a garage up north the so called specialists used threaded bar cut down not even the right size lose in the holes and coming out

makes me so cross people charge for this bodging they should be ashamed so called professionals

20130224_153533_zps4ca377c8.jpg

ill replace the rest now just in case

then just for gunter

20130217_130311_zpsa88292d3.jpg

that rusty thing you mentioned

cleaned painted

20130224_153513_zps6e983345.jpg

fitted > :)

then just for gunter that rusty thing you mentioned

..painted

Alex, you often moan (and you are right there) about the rubbish work 'from so called specialist' there -ok, right

..but simply to paint things, that does not make them more reliable

-I don't said *paint it*.. it is the functional/internal condition that counts, know what I mean ?  ;)

anyway, good luck and we hope you are back on the road with this just in time for summer .

it works fine gunter just looked a bit rusty so ive just made it look better .

turbos have been sent away for both to be refurbed and they were tired leaking and not very good .

bit p***ed off as owen develpments dismantled them but their price for overhauling them was near to the cost of new replacements .but as i packed them ready for turbo technics ive noticed that they have snapped studs in the housings im hoping the boys from coventry can sort it out otherwise i shall be screaming down the phone to owens to sort there cockups.

anyway today i replaced my side repeaters with some more modern ones red on the back and clear front and sides .

makes me chuckle found the "lotus" replacements 127 quid . so went to a gt5 owners club post and bought the renault ones for 22 quid

20130302_114413_zps76ed6e79.jpg

20130302_122838_zps855be403.jpg

also removed the o2 sensors from the cats the are for sale two came out clean two came out with slightly chewed threads even after using the oxy torch to add some heat. so ill buy 4 new ones for the new exhausts .

it is a known thing that the S4 series side-repeaters are available cheap on Ebay for Renault, same as with the Opel ones for the Elise.

..but if you want to sell the RH rear *orange* indicator screen from the AE86 light, just tell what you want for it

what I say is -now as you have red ones on the rear there is no use anymore for the original orange ones, right ?!

..that's why I have asked what you want for one (the RH one)

there was written .. "replaced ..red on the back"..

..so no offense meant, just thought you have done the usual *change from amber/orange* to 'red'  on the rear, same as some guys in the US have done it (where it is legal to have red indicators on the rear)  ..and the 'clear indicators' mod on the other end of the car.

If you allready not have the original Toyota lights -nothing said man .. it's purely my fault ;)

Its really good to see you taking your time and getting it right for you. How long do you think it will be before you get it back together? Do you think you're nearing the end?

this one is slightly different to the left side it has this turret underneath also know as an in built swirl pot . its design is to hold fuel in whilst connering or braking so the engine doesnt run lean and starve of fuel. just in case you wondered :)

then treated it with rust eater to cure any bits missed .

right little tip for this lot if you ever need to re do this before you do anything un bolt the air con pump and alternator and both engine mounts. the connection on the turbo for the water nearest the engine is done first theres a step up connection that goes in first then the pipe .i used a flad 1/2 witworth spanner that was straight and cut and bent an old thicker spanner to the right size but the head was turned 45 to 55 degrees to get in behind the turbo.

once this is on the rest are simple to figure out when there all connected this is the fustrating thing i did a few time before i saw the problem the other end of the water feed on the block had a hard pipe that sits above the bolt for the engine mount so with the alternator and aircon pump out the way you re fit the engine mount first . then do the water inlet for the turbo from the block to the back of the turbo . then re fit the air con and alternator .

Hahaaa, yes I had the same problem when I was fitting heat shields, manifolds and engine mounts etc!

Great work you're doing there Alex. I have my engine out too at present and am busy tidying and repairing. I think next winter project will be looking at suspension refurb, as some of the bits are looking a bit tired. Can't wait to get it all back together and on the road for Spring/Summer, same as you I expect!

Cheers,

Steve.
