Interesting Oil Testing Info

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I though you guys may be interested in some oil testing that we did recently.

We initially wanted to undersand how the viscosity affected engine output so that we could find the sweet spot (thickest oil that didn't reduce power), and recommedn that to our clients.

We were actually very suprised by the results that you can read about here http://tdi-plc.com/blog/category/chairmans-blog/engine-oil-tests and attached.

For most recommendations we're recommending HKS 0w42HR oil with ZX1 aditive which should yield around 4% increase in average power. The 0w20 performs even better but we're unsure of the impact on engine life at this point.

We carry these in stock so perhaps give this some consideration next time you're due a service?

I think I would rather put a higher grade chip in to get the power increase. The risk to the engine would appear to outweigh the benefits.

This type of change would need significant testing.

That's an impressive lot of detailed testing!

I've tried internet searching for manufacturer details to see what they say re road car use and specs etc.

Carlube's website covers the Triple R 10W60 that you tested, with industry standard spec information and a mention of BMW and Alfa. I've not explored suitability yet. It covers many other oils over a wide range. (A non-specific mention of Lotus approval at one point.)

Millers CFS 10W50 is on their website, with industry specs; fast road and track use mentioned, though a competition oil.

Joe Gibbs website gives lots of information on lots of oils, but I couldn't find industry standard spec details.

HKS does not include oil on their European website, so no information at all!

Strictly for the "road/track and meeting manufacturer spec requirements" possibility can you offer any further pointers, particularly re HKS as you offer it?
