Cam Belt Tension

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

Now it's a top season for my Esprit and my baby is running excellent.

Two weeks ago a timing belt has been replaced. We adjusted tension with Laptop and Tune!IT program (measuring the timing belt frequency between the auxiliary shaft and inlet cam pulleys when tapped with a suitable screwdriver).

We setup a frequency on 110 Hz, what should be correct. I rechecked tension yesterday on hot engine and got frequency 137 Hz. Should I worry about it?

Should I visit a mechanic again to reset a frequency to 110 Hz?

Looking forward,

Hi Borut,

You should NEVER check the cambelt tension on a hot engine. As the

engine heats up it expands, and thus the cambelt will tighten. You

should check the cambelt tension on a cold engine.

The specs of the 4 cylinder 910-912 with HTD belt is 100-110Hz with

the engine at 30 BTDC ONLY!

So you are in spec. When you recheck on cold engine don't be surprised

if the tension has lessened as the belt will stretch a bit.
