  5. Copy of original post in Events from @delands https://www.facebook.com/events/769810076737026/?active_tab=about JIM CLARK COUNTRY DRIVE-OUT SUNDAY 7 APRIL 2019 CLUB LOTUS ORGANISER - ANDREW LAING andrew@laingsfoundry.co.uk This event is intended as a revival of the practice which developed in April each year in in the 1970s of Club members setting out as it were on a pilgrimage to Duns in Berwickshire, the home town of Formula 1 World Champion Jim Clark. It is not intended to replace the official Club Lotus national event which has taken place annually in May since 2008 in remembrance of one of our most successful Scottish sportsmen; this official event will take place later this year to coincide with the opening of the extended and refurbished Jim Clark Room in association with the Jim Clark Trust. Perhaps the genesis of our event this April is best illustrated by the extract below from a report in the Club Lotus News magazine in 1978 when it was edited by the late Club Lotus President and ex-Lotus Cars Sales Manager Graham Arnold:- A NOSTALGIC WEEKEND On a windy day in April a larger than expected number members travelled quietly to Duns, in Berwickshire, to pay simple homage to the tenth anniversary of Jim Clark’s death. . This was not a wake or a public display of grief, just a hundred or so people visiting the Jim Clark trophy museum and then attending a film show and talk by Graham Gauld, author of Jim’s biography and other books about his life and careers… The hospitality of the people of Duns has to be experienced and we publish an unashamed “plug” for the proprietor of the Black Bull Hotel in Black Bull Street in Duns… He and his wife made our party unbelievably comfortable with a type of sincere and smiling service unseen for many a year in hotels further south, and the food was good and the bill so small we couldn’t believe it… Duns looks back on Jimmy’s life as probably the greatest achievement a son of Duns will ever record and his memory is held in high esteem. Someone once said: “A measure of a man’s true greatness in his lifetime is just how soon after his death people will speak ill of him.” Jim Clark certainly stands up to this simple yardstick. and so, on to SUNDAY 7th APRIL : CARFRAEMILL HOTEL to DUNS A697 and B6456 11.00 – 12.00 Our trip this year will start and finish at the Hotel at the junction of the A68 and the A697 just north of Lauder. This was the hotel that acted as a watering hole for Jim and his fellow racers on their way home from events up north such as the Hillclimbs in Bo’ness in West Lothian and the Rest-and-be-Thankful in Argyllshire. The hotel staff have been alerted that we are coming (0930 on) in association with the Lotus Enthusiasts Group Scotland (see L.E.G.S.’s website) for breakfast bacon and rolls and maybe more. At this point the arrivals will be issued with a sheet showing the Jim Clark trail with an explanation of the main points on the trail and a route map marking the highlights. This is purely for interest; our route will be clockwise whereas the Trail proper is anticlockwise. Thereafter at about 11.00 we shall set out for Duns in small groups and at a pace to suit, via the A697 and especially the B6456 The idea is to avoid a solid convoy as this would necessitate notifying the police - we must be careful not to frighten the local horses. Note the deletion for this reason in column two of the Trail of any reference to the Clark family farm now under new ownership. At Duns we can in park up wherever we can to catch our breath in Newton Street and inspect how the works are progressing on the Room. DUNS to CHIRNSIDE A6105 12.00 – 01.00 It is from Duns that the Trail proper starts out. We head however for The Cross in Chirnside via the A6105. There you may pay your respects at Jim’s graveside (see the Trail handout) and walk uphill to The Cross where a short ceremony will be conducted in his honour at the commemorative Clock at about one o’clock. CHIRNSIDE to KELSO B6437… B6461 13.30 - 14.30 From this point on, depending on numbers it may be advisable to take all the right roads, but not necessarily in the right order (see reference to horses above). The B6437 from Chirnside takes you to the B6461 and then all the way to Kelso for coffee and cake in the Crosskeys Hotel in the town square. Kelso incidentally was the scene in the early seventies where a certain budding little boy-racer caught sight and sound of the Ecurie Ecosse Racing Team arriving noisily in the town Square on their return from one of their forays to racing circuits south of the Border; thus was smitten at a tender age that small boy from Edinburgh with the addiction to drive fast and noisy sports cars for the rest of his life. KELSO to CARFRAEMILL A6089 and/or B6364 and/or B6397 15.00 – 16.00 From Kelso participants should make their way by whatever route they wish all the way back to the Hotel for a late afternoon dinner. This is not a formal affair - we are invited to choose from the usual menu but it would be useful to be able to give the Hotel an idea of how many of us intend to dine before we leave after breakfast in the morning.

A reminder that our regular monthly breakfast meetings from 3rd February onwards will be at Mannerstons Cafe and Farm Shop , unless an alternative venue is posted up on the forum.
  10. You are correct on one front Mark, times change and other commitments get in the way, in my case it is Switzerland and further travel before I can’t do these long trips or motorhoming on the continent. On the other point when I had my DB9 I went along to one AM meeting for dinner and thought never again, that was 5 years ago. The AM crowd were just not the same as the Lotus fraternity. Hope you have a good turnout today and a consensus on going forward with future breakfast meets. Thanks for your help in the past. Today’s room with a view 🇨🇭😀
  11. Thanks for replying Andy. I now have this vision of you with a bricklayers trowel 😂 I am sure Mr Trump will manage to build his wall without you Yes we have had some great meets and runs over the years and I am a bit sad that it might not continue. Even if there are no regular meets organised in the future, anyone is welcome to post up on the forum if they are organising an impromptu run and I am sure a few others would tag along if they knew about it. I really hope a regular venue can be agreed on so the breakfast meets don’t fall by the wayside. Enjoy Mexico! 🇲🇽 and make sure you wear a sombrero to protect you from the 🌞 Kind regards Brian PS Just about to PM everyone again as a gentle reminder for Sunday as no one has added their name to the list yet although @Alfa2Evora and @Al. have said they will be there.
  12. Thanks John Times change and folks have other interests and nothing wrong with that of course which is probably the main reason for dwindling enthusiasm for breakfast meets and attending shows etc. I do hope one of of our regulars steps up to the plate to help Al. in the future with our meets Hopefully the breakfast meets will continue, possibly at the same venue each month or whatever interval is deemed appropriate. Kind regards Brian
  13. Thanks for your reply and suggestions for future meets. Nothing wrong with your suggestions but it does need someone to organise the away days etc. Organising a regular meet at Powmill or another venue is probably the way forward so that the meets don’t fall by the wayside. Brian

  15. So 2019 is almost upon us and I hope you and your families have a great Christmas and wish you all a Happy New Year. The first meeting of the new year will be at Corrieri's Cafe, Causewayhead, Stirling, FK9 5LH on Sunday 6th January 2019, usual time 10:00am - midday. We have been here a few times before and parking is arranged across the road from the Cafe. I would urge as many of you to attend as possible with or without your Lotus as there are a few things to organise and decide on for the coming year. There has been waning interest in the breakfast meets this year and if they are to continue we need some fresh input as Al. is offshore for a month at a time and has very little internet connection when he is away. I have been doing this for 9 years or so now with Al. and it all started at Powmill Milk Bar with me @Al. and @hedgerley deciding to meet up on a monthly basis for breakfast. After a couple of meets it was suggested that we take the meets around the country which we have done, however it takes time to contact the various venues to organise the meets. I thought that when I retired a few years ago I would have more time on my hands to do the organising as I like to visit new venues in advance to check them out for car parking, seating etc and to speak to the owner or manager of the venue. We have had help from various people over the years and for this I am very grateful. As most of you will know Jackie and I like to travel and it has been quite difficult to fit in the organising. For example, as in previous years I am not available from New Year until end of March possibly mid April this year as we go to Switzerland in the winter. We have a a big trip later in the year down under and will be away for 8 weeks. Looking at the calendar it means that I am not available to attend or organise at least 6 or 7 meetings this year so what I am really saying is that if the meets are to continue we need someone else to step up to the plate on a more permanent basis and help Al. organise these. A couple of suggestions going forward and to be decided at the 6th January meeting: Revert back to the original format and choose a venue that is happy to take the group each month. This would be my favoured suggestion as once organised there is no further organising required. Someone else steps up to the plate on a more permanent basis to help Al. organise future venues which could come from suggestions brought to the January meeting and a calendar of events produced. Reduce the meetings from once a month to once every 2 months throughout the year Only have meetings from April-October Well, it's really up to you all to decide now how this goes forward so please go along to Corrieri's with your suggestions. I have enjoyed doing this over the years but as I said earlier it's time for new blood to come in and help take this forward. I am sorry but I won't be organising any further meetings but will of course attend future breakfast meetings if I am at home. Kind regards, Brian
  16. Mustang Sally is more than welcome, I will have my ear defenders with me. 🎧🙂
  17. OK Mike, thanks for letting me know. 1 & 2 Brian & Jackie 3 & 4 Johnny & Audrey - eventually got the motor back after 8 and 1/2 weeks. 220 miles done on Sunday past. Vrooooom. 5 David (only me as Jennifer will be "doing her own thing" that day) 6 Duggie 7 Mike (weather permitting!)
  18. Unfortunately Jackie and I will be baby sitting in the afternoon so can't go on a drive afterwards.
  19. @Johnny5 Thanks for this John. I was thinking a drive around the Kingdom with maybe a stop off in St Andrews would be good. We can decide on the day what to do depending on weather etc.
  20. We meet for breakfast. We do sometimes have a run out after breakfast but have nothing organised yet after this one. Open to suggestions though.

This is our 2nd visit to this farm Shop and Café, the last visit was exactly 2 years ago and there was a Festive Foodie Market on that day too. The Farm Shop has been extended since our last visit and is a very popular venue for breakfast on a Sunday morning, hence the need to make a reservation and the slightly earlier starting time. Please add your name to the list in the main post, thank you. Kind regards Brian
