  1. Certainly have had all my cars at the local tracks - some during driver training events, some for open lap days. I auto-crossed for a number of years in the Lincoln, not in the Espirt. Never had a deep enough pocket book to do it more seriously - although there is a fairly large group that does the Lotus Challenge series here, and everytime I watch this ->

want want to give it a go... :)

    Here's what I have found (I have a 89 SE):

    - the Esprit does pretty well as a mommentum car, and after you get a couple of good laps in a row, it can get to lap times that are respectable

    - by modern standards, the Esprit does not have enough power in the straight ways for most of the modern cars on the track (porche, corvettes, vipers, mustangs, ....etc).

    - the stock braking is very weak and for a car the should be really good in the corners, you loose some of that with the weak brakes. I upgraded to the PNM Hi-Spec setup and it did make a big difference

    - there is a fair amount of cross-flex in the chassis

    - the notchy shifter is problematic for me in 'panic' situations...

  2. unlike front engined car - the electric fan would actually continue to cool the engine bay for some time after the car is turned off - our rear-engined cars would not have any benefit to leaving the fans running unless we were using an electric water pump and circulating coolant from the rad (where the fans are spinning) to the engine bay....

  3. 5.1 and many of the new full-synths have boiling point over 500 degrees -

............Dry boiling point / Wet boiling point

    DOT 3 - 205 °C (401 °F)/140 °C (284 °F)

    DOT 4 - 230 °C (446 °F)/155 °C (311 °F)

    DOT 5 - 260 °C (500 °F)/180 °C (356 °F)

    DOT 5.1 - 270 °C (518 °F)/190 °C (374 °F)

  4. +1

I just did mine - and there is enough room to do the swap by moving the transmission back as far as you can. You will need a this tool to pull the pilot bearing out (since the more common tool uses a slide hammer and you will not have the room for it)...

  5. Latest:

Veteran circuit designer Hermann Tilke will be responsible for the Austin F1 track, promoter Tavo Hellmund has confirmed to SPEEDtv.com.

Hellmund also says the project is also much further along than has been assumed, and the track has already been drawn.

"This has been long in the works," he said. "Everything is in place."

Although the former racer told local media yesterday that three possible venues were still under consideration, that suggestion was apparently a smokescreen.

While several alternatives were under consideration, one site was settled on some time ago, and the land - over 800 acres - has already been purchased. Not only that but initial permissions for amenities such as water and waste, which are usually time-consuming affairs, have already been granted.

Although Hellmund has yet to divulge details of what he calls a "killer location," he confirmed that the site is to the east of the city, a few miles from the airport. It is said to be in hilly countryside that has provided Tilke with a good starting point for a design.

The German has been asked to create a fast circuit with challenging corners that resemble those of classic established circuits such as Silverstone, Hockenheim and Spa. It will be over three miles in length.

Tilke first sent a representative of his company to Austin around two years ago, and has made personal many visits since. He is currently looking for office space in the city in which to base the project.
