Hi all , what adapter do you need for the Land Rover slave cylinder 266694 to the original red plastic clutch fluid pipe and should I use the original 100mm or the 125mm rod I have? I have had very little trouble from the red pipe except at very hot days getting reverse so have no intention of changing it

So - I'm gonna rip the gearbox out at some point in the next coupe of weeks to have the second gear issue fixed. For those that don't know it's been a bit crunchy now and again - and now it's properly buggered off for good - so guessing the dog teeth things have all busted off. Reckon I will change fifth as well. the question is - while I'm at it - do I sneak in one of these nice diffs?? Are they worth while? Do they make a difference? Thoughts ? cheers

On my way back from enjoyable few days in Norfolk I had a sickening 'ping' when pressing the clutch pedal and the unmistakable sound of something hitting the tarmac below the car that told me this was unlikely to be a road-side fix. Wandering back along the road I retrieved this :- Fatigue failure - perhaps after 25 years of use it is not too surprising. At least I've now got a good excuse to change out clutch and service a few things whilst I am at it. Ian

I’ve been using lockdown to get going with jobs long overdue on my esprit S4! Cam belt done! So next the drive shaft oil seals. The manual references a tool for inserting the new seals, with two different collars (18 & 20mm). But I was hoping to be able to use a standard seal drive set that I have or an appropriate large socket that fits the seals. The key seems to be the depth to which one insert the new seal into the recess. I’ve measured the existing depths before disturbing anything. But my question to the experts out there is how do I measure the required insertion depth? I don’t want to do the job but still have leaks cos I haven’t pushed the se…

Hi all, according to Lotus parts list this washer is used on the S4, one on each side of the gearbox with 7/16” bolts and on the V8,one on the left and two on the right, with the same bolts but says the washers are M10 ,this is clearly wrong as 7/16”=11.1125mm,so wouldn’t pass through the washer. Taking the gearbox out of my S4 this time, there was one washer on left and two on right, both 2” not 1 1/2 “ as it says elsewhere under this part number. Many years ago Lotus Cardiff took out my gearbox .Did they put an extra washer on the right by mistake or was this a production change? I take it the washers are for alignment reasons. I realise the o/d will likely m…

Hello Everyone, In true "New, old car" fashion I have just managed to get my 1990 SE running properly and it would appear that the rear crank oil seal is leaking. I changed the engine oil, drove about 50 miles and was about to change the gearbox oil and found a small puddle of engine oil on the floor below the little gap between the bell housing and the engine, its definitely engine oil. As I am going to have to remove the gearbox, I may as well do the clutch as well, and might put in a lightened flywheel. can I ask what parts I will need and is there anything else I can replace as a preventative maintenance measure? I am still waiting for a cop…

What is the length of the slave cylinder rod? I think someone in the past has fitted a different rod and cylinder to mine. The rod measures 125mm and the cylinder looks like the image of a series 3 Landover. Thank you

As mentioned in the chat section my UN1-027 gave up due to the excessive torque created in my modified 424 bhp 910 engine... The failure in this case was the primary shaft at 5th gear, this is the most common place for it the shear.. other areas that fail from to much torque are the 2nd gear dog teeth and the crown wheel and pinion, however these are more likely to fail from aggressive snap gear changes that create a shock loading on top of the torque. Just fitting a replacement box would be a short term fix with the same inevitable results as before... The solution i have adopted is the GTO racing kit, The one piece thicker primary shaft with the close ratio 1s…

Hi all, I have a leaking slave cylinder. Does anyone know of the part number or an equivalent one readily available from a local store? Actually looks straight forward enough to change?

Yep, need Ten Little Indians to play! Well..., actually only 6 now, LOL. I met in November 2014 with the President of EMCO Gears, which manufactured the UN-1 transmission upgrade kit for Holloway Performance. EMCO is willing to make more kits, but the minimum production order would have to be at least 10 units. EMCO is asking $4000.00 per kit, which is very close to the closing sale price of the original Holloway kit. This is a great deal, because the original production run required 20 units minimum. EMCO manufactures racing gear sets for INDY cars, Porsche, Ferrari and other high performance cars, so they have a proven track record. It would be great if …

HI, is has been a really long time since I came to this site, as have mostly been on FB. I think this is a topic that has been discussed many times, but some of the photos are no longer able to view. I have an 89 2.2 NA with the renault box. Although I can get a lot of advice on FB, I found that as the topic is pushed further and further down the page, the responses gets lesser and lesser. I guess this is how the system works in FB, which is not exactly ideal for an ongoing work being done on the car.. Though I do appreciate all the advice I had on FB during the years After owning the Esprit for nearly 5 years, it is time to refurbish the gearbox. I was ha…

I'm at the stage where, the gearbox is poised to come out BUT I'm staring at the driveshafts and not wanting to go any further in fear of damaging something in removing - Anyone know of an idiots guide for the removal of them in order to get the box out? Handbook states ' use tool T000006078' to remove concentric pins , this is a pin punch, but what size? And before I set to at any 'pins' where exactly are they? Cheers all.

Hi guys! While I am reassembling the back end of the car, I was wondering if it is correct, that the drive shafts/ final drive has a very little bit of radial slack ? I mean… when I push the output shafts up or down, they seem to be not without play! is that correct? It are the bearings worn? thanks patrick

On my way home last night I lost all the action on the clutch but managed to pump it up a bit to crawl the last few hundred yards. Not surprisingly, the master cylinder was empty. Master cylinder is in good condition and there is a braided clutch hose fitted so I am assuming it’s the slave cylinder that’s gone. I guess its located under one of the floor panels in the boot but before I start pulling things apart: Can you confirm what I have to remove to access it? Assuming I go for a replacement cylinder rather than a seal kit, what car does the slave cylinder come from. I need to get the car on the road for the weekend so any help would be appreciated Thank…

Hallo everyone, I have a Esprit SE Turbo 4 Cyl - 1992 Yesterday while I was driving I pressed my clutch pedal and it didn't come back. I had to pull it back to its normal position with my hand. I've had that several times. For now everything is back to normal. Does anyone know what the problem is? My Hydraulic liquid is ok. Thanks in advance.

After experiencing a slipping clutch in the S4s a few weeks back it's been hard graft at weekends getting the gearbox off and getting the necessary parts ordered. Luckily during my prior recommissioning of the car I had already addressed the need for quick removal of the boot floor by removing the previous repairs done by garages who had obviously come up against seized bolts in rusty rivnuts in the past by replacing them all with labour intensive locknuts, bolts and washers. I installed jack nuts and stainless bolts so everything came apart easily. I took the opportunity to replace the gearshift cable ball joints and those on the translator arm, removed the exhaust,…

Righto - I’m proper bloody confused this is the bearing which is with my car The bearing itself removes from this assembly by undoing the clip sj sports list a replacement assembly and a bearing. The assembly looks noticeably different. The bearing requires you to press put the middle and reuse. The middle of the above bearing does not press out - tried on a press - trust me it’s a one piece thing. this just looks wrong Which is this but needs to swap bits everything I can find simply doesn’t look right - I can’t be the only person to have had this issue - help

Hi all, There seems to be some confusion on what Castrol is doing with the Lotus recommended gearbox oil, Castrol Syntrans Transaxle. Some reports have surfaced revealing, that it is no longer available in North America. Well, I took the liberty and called Castrol Nordic this morning and spoke to Erik Örnflo about the matter. He confirmed that it is out, and there will be a new product, called Castrol Transmax Manual Transaxle. No more than that, and he didn't know if it would be the same, or a different oil and additives. So, I also called Castrol Headquaters (in UK) this afternoon, and aske them some questions. Here is a summary of our conversation: …

Gents, I am a new Esprit owner, wow what a vehicle! I experienced the grinding gears, can't get into reverse or first when the vehicle is hot, on my maiden voyage. I purchased a braided hose from SJ Sportscars. You really get intimate with your Esprit routing this line! Anyhow the SJ fitting does not thread into my slave cylinder, seems the slave is threaded M12 x 1.0 and SJ's fitting is 3/8 unf. Has anyone run into this issue? I have a shop sourcing the required adapter/fitting but what a pain. Car is non functional and I'm chasing fittings for another week...
