Got to laugh at all the TT banter that gets thrown about.
Chris, I used to own a Mk1 TT coupe (1.8T 225 Quattro). I sold mine before ordering my 2010 Exige cup 260. I was very happy for the couple of years I owned mine. If you have been in a modern Audi before you will know that there are a very nice place to be during any journey. They are well built and the design of the TT still turns heads (don't even get me started on that French Peugeot monstrosity! Why can't those surrender monkeys just come up with their own original designs instead of poaching on the success of others)
I strongly advise the 1.8T Coupe Quattro model. This will hold the road well in the wet. You should be able to get one with all the optional extras (Bose sound system, CD stacker, Climate control etc...) without being pushed to pay extra for this. I learned that these bits just helped the car sell ahead of less equipped ones.
The handling can be improved on though. I quickly found that I had grown out of the capabilities of the car before too long so I upgraded a lot of the suspension and brake components.
Be careful of buying a pup, I would advise getting one from a dealer as this will include a warranty. When an Audi breaks it costs more than you thing to get fixed. A clutch replacement was £1200, and that didn't include the slave cylinder or flywheel (the DSG box is fantastic, once warm, but is very expensive to service and repair). Audi use all sorts of weird and wonderful bolts, nut sizes, and obscurely located fittings in order to make life hard for the DIY mechanic to carry out jobs at home.
I have many a good tale about the Mk1 TT, so feel free to ask anything more, I'll try to help.
