Sunbeam - Gearbox rear oil seal

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Has anybody replaced the rear (propshaft) oil seal on a ZF Lotus Sunbeam gearbox? Can this be done in situ? (he says hopefully...)

Cheers,

Mike

Yes it can.  Drain the box, remove the propshaft, lever out the old seal (using a steel shim under your lever to prevent damage to the gearbox housing and being very careful not to scratch the inner surface of the housing) then use the normal disc shaped driver to tap in the new one.  Its very easy to get it non-square, so go careful.

Note that any scarring or corrosion on the outer part of the prop splined end will mean a new seal is highly unlikely to work. Remember to refill with fresh oil!

Seals available from Lotusbits and Skip Brown.
