Coolant Reservoirs

What is the back reservoir and at what level should it be? Noticed spilled coolant on the sides of the bottle and below. Was wondering if the CAI was messing with it.

Also included picture of the front reservoir. I know it’s level isn’t supposed to be below 1 inch of the seam line

The back reservoir is the cooling system header tank. I believe the level when cold should be about 10mm below the seam, and no more than 25mm below the seam. Any more than that and there's the potential for coolant to be expelled when the system is hot, as there's no room left to expand.

The front reservoir is for your charge cooler, and its max level is indicated by the line on the RHS.

  • 3 weeks later...

Took the car to the dealership for oil change and to check coolant reservoirs.

Turned out to be a leaking cap on the Charge Cooler Coolant Reservoir. They said it heats up the plastic cap and makes it leak when driving. A known problem. Recommended I replace with an aluminum cap. They put some sealant on it as a temp fix.

On the launch year of the 400 lotus used an alloy tank with alloy lid..  I guess they changed to plastic for cost cutting!
