A lot of love for the Esprit in the new issue of The Road Rat #16 - a 14 page feature on the story of the S1 with quotes from Mike Kimberley and Giugiaro plus two further articles including a Q&A about the entire Esprit range with Max Hurst from Max500 - really good to see the Esprit getting serious praise in such a high end publication 😊

Not me this time! I’m intrigued - it’s got the tartan interior but the credit simply reads ‘a 1978 S1’ (so obvs not originally white/tartan!) 😊

Benedict Redgrove on photographing an early Lotus Esprit for The Road Rat Edition 16: 

“Giugiaro’s futuristic Esprit S1 design stirred my soul when I saw it as a child, and had the same effect when I walked into the studio for this shoot and saw its low profile. It is stunning in person. As with all cars from the '70s, it seems so small now and its crisply angular silhouette is so exacting in its execution.

“Like many children of my generation, I had a toy version of the white Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, with moving wings that popped out from the side when you pressed a button. I treasured it because of the purity of that wedge design – more future than the future. It fascinated me.”
