Safe Speed's Paul Smith dies

Recommended Posts

Paul Smith, a respected campaigner against speed cameras and founder of safespeed.org.uk, died yesterday aged 52.

Smith was well known for his belief that speed cameras reduced road safety, and that safe driving wasn't just about speed, but about improving road safety through measures such as better driver training.

The specific cause of Smith's death is not known, though it's believed he died of a heart attack or stroke.

His partner of 22 years, Claire Armstrong, has already said she will continue his work.

Without doubt the most successful and well respected pro-motorist campaigner. A truly great loss :D

I've interviewed him a couple of times on the radio - a VERY intelligent campaigner against the institutional lies people like the DoT and ACPO spew out by rote. He really thought through the issues and came up with great alternatives. He was so prolific though I did wonder what had given him such a blunt axe to grind...

The guy was so right. Speed cameras and so called traffic calming measures force the driver to look at the road just in front of them, or up in the air for yellow boxes instead of reading the road and watching for genuine hazards.

It's a real shame that we've lost a clear-headed thinker and campaigner, and at such a young age. I only hope the work he's started has the momentum to continue in his absence, so that it will stand as a fitting memorial to him.

More speed, less haste
