Burroughs Gauge

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have one?

Engines out at the moment and I will be replacing the timing belt. I Obviously want to get the tension correct. Does anyone have a burroughs gauge I might borrow in the immediate future?

Alternatively, what fiendish and dastardly alternatives has anyone come up with?

Apparently there is a tuning fork alternative?

Any thoughts and / or assistance would be appreciated :)

Perhaps as a Club, we could start to build a pool of available special tools?

Yes, the cricket guage is what you need and very easy to use if you are doing belts. It is a great tool and not common anymore due to automatic tensioners that are so common today. i have done belts enough to "feel" the correct amount of tension, but it is nice to get done and have the guage to check it... so far i have not been more than 1/2 pound off...

The US guys use Krikets I think somebody was looking at buying a few and shipping them over to the UK. I'd suggest google search for them.

I guess I'm lucky, I bought myself a Burroughs gauge.

Reason for edit correcting krikit to kriket

Here is the catalogue page for the Krikit gauge that the Excel guys are using. It does say not recommended for timing belts but the part number is confirmed on the Excel forum.

http://www.gates.com/europe/brochure.cfm?b...ocation_id=2976

It costs about 15.00 GBP + p&p.

The Excel forum topic is at

The facom one is relatively simple.

Measure the thickness of the belt (gauge supplied), put an insert into the gauge determined by the belt thickness.

Press handle, slip onto belt, reade guage depending on new belt Vs old belt etc.
