value of 93 s4

Recommended Posts

I've been searching the Internet for some answers, but only found NADA value, so I figured I'd ask the experts. The car is a 93 s4 with 6300 miles. The description says the car is in excellent showroom condtion, but I would have to disagree. There are scrathes or cracks throughout the paint. Maybe it was used as a shelf when parked in the garage or is the paint known to crack? B) The driver's side door edge is scraped up pretty bad as if the driver counldn't figure out there was a concrete wall next to him or her. It also appears as if they had trouble locating the lock cylinder as there are scratches around the door handle. The front has been hit at one point. There is no damage, but again cracked paint. The driver's side seat in my opinion is rather worn on the bolster (for such low mileage) and the rear wheel has some serious curb rash on the lip.

I have two cars with 40,000 miles on them and both are in better cosmetic condtion than this Esprit - one is even older than the Esprit. Makes me question the authenticity of the mileage. Now I know I'm very anal when it comes to the condition of my cars, but for 6300 miles, I'd expect the car to look brand spankin new!

As for it's mechanical condition, I don't know. I was told it has clutch shudder. Is that common or is it because the car isn't driven enough? What mechanical issues should I be looking out for?

I didn't take it for a drive as it was 8:15 am and no one was around. I might go back later, but they're asking $36,000 which seems a little high to me, and I just may be wasting my time.

Thanks,

Mike

I found it - Autotrader. It is an SE, 93.5 same as mine. For 35k you should be able to get a really nice S4 or S4s. I would hold out, that one sounds abused.

Sorry about that. I thought 92 was the end for the SE and that 93 started the S4. But yeah, that would be the one in the autotrader. What year was the first for the S4?

Hey Mike,

I too am from PA. I wanted and S4 as well. It took 2 years of searching to find what I really wanted. I wanted a white one ...drove quite a few in that time. When I drove the one I bought I knew it was the right one to go with ...no doubts about it...drive as many as you can. The price is going to vary but the good ones are 30K and above.

Let me know if you need any help when looking at one. I also have a great mechanic who knows these cars very well. He is the only person I allow to work on it.

Best of Luck

Jason

Thanks for the offer Jason. I may just have to take you up on it. I see you're from Philly. I'm in Bucks County, so you can't be too far from me.

Not sure what others may have experienced, but I cant help but be skeptical of an Esprit at a used dealership. Maybe it's that old cliche 'used car salesman' thing.

I see it's also on Ebay.

They're a pretty reputable BMW dealer, but who knows.

Thanks,

Mike

Wear on the driver's side bolster is almost always present, and looks worse on the magnolia and tan interiors. So I would not hold that against any used Esprit. The 93 1/2 has the different door panels and door handles, and likely the faux carbon fiber dash. They are extremely rare...I believe less than 20 made that way in the United States....kind of a transition car to the 94 S4. There were no 93 S4's in the United States.

If you are not revving the car to at least 2000 before releasing the clutch, then you may experience shudder from a stop. Guess it depends how you drove it. If you experience shudder after that rpm, then the clutch might be worn (another sign of user abuse)....other sources of shudder could be a mis-adjustment of the pivot point at the clutch fork, or air in the clutch lines. But on a car with that mileage none of those should come into play...it should be nice.-

1993's had the "Revolution" replica style wheels that were on the Sport 300, and had the X-180R style spoiler that is larger than the SE but smaller than the V8 style. The most attractive pedestal style wing on Esprits in my opinion (but hey I'm biased, I had one B) )

I think that price is crazy and it will not sell at that price. My 93 had 40K miles and had only a few stress cracks here and there, and it was taken care of cosmetically on the outside. Sounds like that one is WAY over priced. You could get an S4s for that price they want.

Good luck on your search.

The only 93 Esprit I see on eBay is NOT an S4...it couldn't be anyway since the S4 was made in '94 and '95. I'd pay $25-$28K max given the description you've provided. With that mileage, a clean S4s could be worth more than $30K, but not this car.

Hi,

Firstly ,these cars are very easy and often "clocked".A lot have had speedo changes as well as the VDO guages are known for needing repairs. Having said that if the dealer is guaranteeing the miles then you have no worries there.

As for stress cracks.I have occasionally had them on earlier Guigaro cars and there were a couple on my Soprt 350,however the shell on the sport is a LOT thinner than other Esprits and the cracks were along the rail above the side windows which is a rivit on part anyway. If you have ever seen a 350 with the windscreen out you will be amazed at how they flex!!

I had an S4 with like star crazing and cracks to both the front and rear bumpers. This I suspect was due to parking nudges and is because the bumper sare very flexible on these cars.Any cracks betwen the lights on the front panel would point to a fairly hard nudge though,so be careful. Most Esprits have door chips as they are too wide for their garages!!!

As for the money we are in totally different markets so I can't comment. Its usual for dealers etc to try and get a premium for so called "low mileage cars" but I have said this before with an Esprit....Buy on condition not mileage every time.

Take care,

Jason

Jason,

Thanks for the offer, but since I'm just tire kicking at the moment, I don't want to be a bother. If I find anything or have any questions, I'll pm you. If you're ever in the Doylestown with the Esprit, let me know as I'd like to see it.

When you bought the Esprit, did you look locally or everywhere and anywhere?

Thanks,

Mike

Mines a 93 S4 and I did get it at an absolute snip. But beware! If you buy a cheap one it will end up costing you as much as a clean and perfect one. I've spent over
