Esprit 85turbo

Hello everybody

Finally my 85turbo (twin dellorto) starts well. I had a few issues with the ignition but those should be resolved now (bad earth).

Now I had a few opportunities to drive the car and my feeling is that it is "juddering", mainly under boost.

The needle of the pressure gage is juddering as well. When I pull the shoke the vehicle becomes more responsive, it seems to run better then.

CO level engine hot at idle is 0.6-0.8% ,that should be ok ?

I reckon the ignition side is ok now, so there may still be something "wrong" on the fuel side.

When driving you can feel that it is a very fast and responsive car, but full performance on mine is not yet there. Guess she still wants a bit more attention. :-)

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Regards

Marc

My Late '85 Esprit Turbo has done what you describe until my latest bout of fettling. I balanced the carbs and set the CO levels with the help of this forum and some stuff that isn't in the manuals. However, even though I was convinced I 'd set the timing correctly in the past, there was still spitting back through my carbs and uneven, juddery running as the turbo started to boost. This was most noticable with gradual tubo progression rather than a quick boot to the floor with the right foot.

Simple answer for me. Ignition timing.

I posted a question as to what this should be recently but haven't had a definitive answer here. I'm using the 25 degrees BTDC at 3500-4000rpm I got from the factory. All now seems to be much better. The potential of the car I bought is back and I will give it one more morning of fine tuning and it should be there.

I reckon you're probably runnng weak. I think 'the book' suggests 1% CO2, but I cant get anywhere near that. The MOT limit is 4%. I run at nearer 2.5%. No problem with idle to mains progression and possibly safer for the pistons.

Steve - I put the definitive timing answer on your other post! (well it was definitive in 1987!!). Perhaps the advice has changed as fuels have changed, although I would have thought SUL is similar octane to the old 4 Star leaded.

I think it's just so happy to be running and the judder is of pleasure!

Helpful I may not be but optimistic I am!! B)

Thanks for all your feedbacks

Guess I will try to change the CO level.

I have an exhaust gas tester and the manual, so I should be able to figure out what screws to adjust.

I'll try it out and let you know.

I'll have a look here on the forum, maybe there is some information on carb. adjustment available.

Cheers

Same problem with mine. I took it to a carb specialist who ran it up on a rolling road. He saw the mixture getting weak around 3k revs, just as the turbo comes in. He recommended taking the idle jets up a size so I changed them from 40 to 42, haven't had a problem since.

Hope that helps

Hello

Sunday afternoon, good weather and a bit of time to fiddle on the Lotus.

I have adjusted the CO at idle to 2.5% by adjusting the idle mixture screws.

The car's response is now significantly better.

I'll have to do the fine tuning now - guess carburettors will have to be balanced.

Don't know why the car is not running smooth at 1% CO as the manual suggests.

Thanks a lot for your input - that really helped !

Cheers

Marc
