Danny,

I have the hubs off the car as I am relacing all the bushes so thought I would do the bearings for exactly that reason, don' want to take them off twice.

Mercman,

Yes I could take them but wondered if someone knew the sizes and that would save time as I haven't removed the bearings from the hub yet. Thought I might be able to pick them up prior and do the job in one hit.

Trevor.

I'll get around to it at some point.

Sorry to read about your inferior balls, Scott.

You're right, though. However, a bearing specialist may be able to put you onto some better than standard bearings. If you get cheap ones, you will be changing them sooner than if you were to get good ones.

Good bearings are expensive and harder to find. If you go to a bearing supply house make sure they aren't from CHINA. Another consideration is what grease are in them. Want to make sure it can take the load. Just for peace of mind I will pop the seal and see. If it is some lightweight stuff I simple clean and replace with a good moly or synthetic.

SJ may have already done the research and thus you see a better quality bearing at a higher price.

Happy hunting,

Jeff

All,

Thanks for you input and I have done the easy thing and spent the money with SJ. I will be interested to know what the packet says as regards origin as at that price I wouldn't expect them to be Lotus.

Tonyp,

When you pressed out the outboard shaft did it taKe the inner race with it and the balls fall out?. Mine did. Much of a job to get back in?

Well, I took the upright off the car & took it to a local machine shop along with the new bearing & cone washer. They destroyed the old bearing & also the big stub axle knut they had to use so much pressure. Making a bed on the press the biggest difficulty. The new one went in ok apparently. I just refitted the upright, got it all torqued up properly & all fine now. Cost me

Trevor,

just two tips for the assembling procedure:

put the new bearings in the freeze one night before installing them and put the hub in boiling water.

In this way you don't need any press or tube to fit them...you can put the new bearings with a finger pressure.

Also spray some antiseize on the outer face of the bearings, it will be good for a future removal.

Hope this help.

Cheers

Giorgio
