Gel coat/fiberglass repair

Recommended Posts

I have my own way of repairing fiberglass or gel coat repairs but just wondered what everyone else does and if this is the best way.

The front wing of the Esprit has stress cracks in the gel coat, doesnt appear that they are cracks in the fiberglass but how is best to tackle this.

I would normally use a small grind stone to open the area up slightlly and then fill it with resin. Then sand back and paint on some gel coat. Once all dry then sand back aagain and give a very thin layer of filler to level the surface completely befor applying primer.

Anyone else got any better ideas or tips.

You need to repair the gel coat with tissue.

This is a very good book by a renowned Lotus & fibreglass expert.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Restore-Fibreglass...746&sr=1-15

The price seems extortionate though, I'm sure it was less than twenty quid new??

hi wayne

there is a very good product available ,made in the UK by" U Pol ". you should find the products at a bodyshop paint supplier.Any way the product is called SMC or sheet material composite .It is basically a carbon fibre re-inforced resin system ,twin pack that you apply very similar to a bodyfiller. It is to say the least excellent for adhesion and prepared correctly will never crack.

any more l;et me know ol chap
