Cambelt change

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm new here on the forum, I've recieved my 1989 Esprit Turbo yesterday, I'm French and 57 years old...

I know I've to change my cambelt, because it's from 2003! I hope I can do it with the engine within the car... Do I need the Burroughs gauge or can I use another tensiometer (from Facom for example)?

There is no Lotus dealer near me, only far away...

Thank you for your advices.

There have been plenty of posts on this very subject. I'm not familiar with the belt replacement on the L4 engine, but I've come to understand that it is in fact possible to replace without removing the engine. As for the tension gauge, some members have mentioned that the "Kricket" tension gauge works. If you can't find information on here, I recall reading a writeup on LEW that documents the procedure on 88-96 models.

Hi, welcome, yes I am pretty sure its the same as my 1990 SE, the cam belt was changed a while ago (before the new engine) and it was done by Mr "Sparky" bit fiddley but not normally a problem, just ensure you have the tensioner the correct way around ( see the manual) and while you are about it change the other belts at the same time. get the car up at a good working height and some good light, take your time and get it right.

Have fun, Dave

Hi and welcome to the forum. How far are you away from Nantes? My local Lotus specialist PNM Engineering regularly goes to Nantes and has in the past serviced customer's car whilst there. He would do your cambelt change if you were local to where he visits.

Drop me a PM and we can discuss further.

Ps, did you buy your car from Kelvendon Motors by any chance? I recently supplied some clear rear indicator lenses to them for a customer of theirs who was coming over from France to collect a car around 9th Feb.

Hello,

Another method is usig a Clavis gauge or a computer/laptop with a reasonable microphone and a piece of software called tuneit which is used for calibrating musical instruments. If you search the forum with the argument tuneit you get all the needed information.
