Oil priming before firing

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

Should be a simple one.

I have not started my engine for quite a few months now and want to crank it over without firing to circulate some oil.

What is the best / easiest method to do this?

disconnect HT leads or disable fuel pump?

Thanks

Dave

Start it.

At low starter motor RPM you wont generate enough oil pressure.

If I leave it for ages I usually drain a bit of oil and pour it back down the filler - (check levels before start) and then start.

After an oil change I generally spin the motor on the starter with no plugs to circulate the oil, as Jonathan says it won't give you oil pressure but the needle sits on zero a shorted length of time when you do fire it. Not sure it does any good, but it makes me feel better.:)

Cheap & cheerful - I disconnected the turbo oil feed on the side of the block. Attach a piece of rubber tube with a funnel on the end (higher than the top of the engine). Then fill up with oil a couple of times to let gravity do the work. reconnect turbo feed & start

TBH as long as you don't stress the engine at start up it should be fine, by all means disconnect the fuel if you wish, or remove the plugs or similar, but running for a few seconds with only residual oil on the components will not be too bad as long as you leave the throttle alone.

Hi

Its best to remove the plugs as this reduces the load on the pistons and also allows engine to spin faster, this in turn will be fast enough to generate some oil pressure, !00 percent certain
