Question about the Clutch master cylinder

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've got a leak on the clutch master cylinder on my '88 Turbo. I seem to remember that there is a repair kit available. Does anyone know where to get one (other than Lotus of course). Or failing that, is a new cylinder available from a non-Lotus source in the UK?

Any help appreciated.

Any of the specialists will sell you a kit. I wouldn't bother, if the bore is at all scored it will soon leak again. You can get a cylinder for reasonable money. Paul Matty sells them. I would think all the other specialists do also. You will probably get one from your local brake factors if you take the old one with you (I seem to remember it's a Girling item). You might have to use your existing pushrod but that's simple to swap.

Note: Make sure you note which hole in the pedal the clevis pin goes through. There are two holes, one is used for the brake clevis and the other for the clutch as the two pedals are the same. And good luck replacing the two anti rattle washers between the clutch master fork and the pedal!

Hi there.

I got a wilwood master cylinder from PNM.

Not a bad price and saved messing with a rebuild. Good news was though that it is a slightly bigger bore and makes the clutch feel a bit better. Quite easy to fit too.

In my car the holes are marked B (brake) and C (clutch).

If you can get down the footwell and see that, you must have eyes like a shithouse rat! :(

The markings were really there, the B and the C were stamped next to the holes. I was about to mark the right hole when replacing the clutch master and slave cylinder when i saw them. I removed the drivers seat in order to gain better access. Spotting the marks was not that difficult compared to getting the clevis pin in with the wavy washers.

Good luck and if you need any advice let me know.
