Engine removal for cambelt change

I have been looking at the various website prices that independants charge for cam belt replacement as these seem to be in the region of £600-700 am I right in thinking this is taking the engine to undertake the work? one other reason I would like to know is that my car has developed a blowing sound on one side and a quick visit to a fellow V8 owner yesterday confirmed that the one stud was missing and the other you could just about put a nut on but this did not improve the situation. As the belt was last changed in 2009 I thought i might as well start with a clean sheet and upgrade all the studs and change the cambelt and bits.

Hi David,

It is not necessary to remove the V8 engine to replace the cambelts. The independants would certainly not be removing the engine and undertaking the belt service for that price. It is, however, definitely far easier to attend to the belts (and check things like the intermediate shaft bearings) with the engine removed.

If you need to attend to the manifolds, then it would also be a good chance to check the fuel tanks, as the car is around 10 years old.

This is one of the many areas where owners can really save themselves a lot of money if they can do the work themselves.

Cheers,

Mike S
