Hi,I will be putting the engine back in my S4 esprit soon.When I bought the car approx two years ago the  air con was not working ( no Gas) .How can I check to see if the compressor is working before I gas it up.Cheers Paul G.

Short circuit the connectors of the pressure switch (on the A/C drier) and turn the A/C on. Do not run the compressor for anything other than the briefest of time to verify its operation as without the gas it will not be getting lubricated.
