Just read your question regarding the VARI system being unsuccessful.  My understanding is that the VARI system was very successful.  When it was introduced to the manufacturing process for the Elite and Éclat it was seen to be the saviour of the company as they could produce a body shell in about 45 minutes which is a lot quicker than hand laying and obviously giving massive cost savings.  Then moving on to the later Excel.  I do understand however that the G cars remained as a hand lay up process and were never built using the VARI process.  No idea why and no idea if it is true.

Fantastic pictures. My car is an 88 model so could have featured. Wonder what happened to all those workers.
