2.2 esprit NA engine required due to issue

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Unfortunately, I have been the receiver of bad news recently,  during the servicing of my Esprit 2.2 NA 88-89 it was discovered that a misfire was taking place, with further investigation it turns out the bore lining in cylinder 4 is coming away and I have been advised to replace the engine or rebuild it.

My first question is, whether anyone has any reconditioned 2.2 esprit NA engines for sale or know of any?

i can get hold of a 2.2 Excel reconditioned engine, apart from the crankshaft, are these the same as an esprit engine?

Any advise would be most grateful

thanks

Have they removed the head due to low compression. Did they clamp the liners when they took the head off. I would be asking questions to find how they come to the conclusion that a liner is coming away before going to a fair bit of expense. I do know of an n/a engine, not rebuilt, but came out of a fire damaged car with 57k miles on it if your stuck.

Hi Lloyd, as with others I'm unsure what the exact nature of the problem is but suspect that's going to be resolved.

Your question re cranks, the Esprit is likely cross-drilled and so considered superior to the Excel. The bearing surface for the gearbox input shaft may be different depending on exact age (move from needle roller to ball bearing race), but if the donor crank is from your current engine then it will be what you want. The guide written by Mike at Lotusbits gives info that may help, admittedly it's written from a PoV of improving an Excel engine it can help in your situation.

Liner coming away, as per posts above if this means the liner has separated from the block then re-build, but I suspect you mean that the ceramic coating is separating from the metal. If it's the coating then either obtain a liner & piston (used) or have your liner re-coated (which will include honing). If you're looking for a re-con engine in order to speed up the process then the only thing I'd say is that re-building your engine keeps the originality which some future purchaser may care about.

Hi All,

thanks for for your replies, yes, they removed the head due to a low compression found in cylinder 4. I have been told that the the lining is damaged and come away which has caused the fail. How much should a rebuild cost?

I cannot comment on cost as I do my own but you could call Lotusbits and they can give a figure to rebuild your engine including supplying parts known to be required, although unexpected finds would add to that. They don't do their own rebuilds but have somebody on-site who is a specialist.

Unknowns could easily include, head planing if not flat, valves (seats re-cut, guides replace, valves replace), crank grind / polish.

Another option is an engine from Lotusbits (expect £2k) and they takes yours in part-exchange. You get a known running engine, but you also know it's not newly refurbished so not as nice as new bearings, rings etc.

I seem to remember my stage one engine from lotus bits was about £4500. To get the best from it   you need a good manifold, exhaust and mapped ignition or efi.
