Steering Column Clearance

Recommended Posts

Was due to get the Esprit MOTd today but didn't manage to make it off the driveway before I discovered a problem...

Over the winter I had my steering rack refurbed by Lotusbits, which of course involved removing the rack and column. Many hours and skinned knuckles later the whole lot was back on and I spent time making sure it was all moving freely with no bulking in the UJs etc. Followed the manual for the 3 spline offset and used the rubber hose spacer, circlip etc, all by the book.

All seemed fine until today when I got to the end of the drive, dipped the clutch and turned the wheel. Suddenly 'clunk' as the bolt in the upper UJ clipped the spring clip in the clevis pin through the clutch pedal arm.

Now I'm hoping that some minor tweaking of the column angle might cure it but wondering if something is fundamentally wrong here or if these 2 parts are normal very close (but not an interference fit). It looks like the clevis pin can only go in from the left because of proximity to the column, which leaves the longer part and the clip adjacent to the column UJ joint.

Is anyone able to post a photo of how close together these two things are on their car before I decide what to do first?

Not worth starting anything now...🍺
