  1. hey guys can anyone provide detailed tech info on what lotus changed about the gearbox to allow for the increase availability of torque in the lower gears? I understand also that after it was implemented in the 350 sport, every v8 produced afterwards has the same strengthened gearbox? Does that mean theoretically (ignoring the weight difference) that a v8 made post 350 sport era with the added 350 sport ECU would be nearly as fast?
  2. Am I right in saying this should make a whining sound when I turn off an engine which is above auto-fan cut in temp, or turned off above 90ish? I've never heard it. As such I'm not sure it works and I enjoy replacing things preventatively but maplin don't ship to Australia. Any kind soul out there want to let me transfer then seven quid plus shipping plus shipping to Australia?? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/mfa-general-purpose-motor-11500rpm-ha87u Also, my throttle jack doesn't cut in when I turn the aircon on ...I'd love that to work too!! Any hints?
  3. ...which brings me to the real crux of the matter then, where the hell does all my refrigerant keep going!!! Damn leak somewhere hmmmmmmmmm. Thanks guys I'll investigate...
  4. But if I turn the aircon knob shouldn't it always energize the radiator fans regardless of whether or not I have any r134a in there or not? Turning the knob makes a relay somewhere make a click noise but the fans don't energize like they always used to?
  5. Help my fans are working, cutting in when the engine gets to about 90-99 and then cutting out again at 80 but if I turn the aircon knob nothing happens anymore, it used to energise the fans? I can hear the the clicking if the relay but nothing happens? Where do I look? It can't be the relay because the fans obviously still work? Unless they are on separate relays??
  6. *sell the bush insertion tool. Ah I answered my own question it's already in the list!! Never mind that last bit then...
  7. Hey BibS! I'm ready to place my order for the list above but I need to know what part numbers for the ARB bushes and also, the poly bush program seemed to only do the rear, what should I order for the fronts? Also do you have the bush insertion tool?
  8. so, 66 pages later, the final word is, Lotus needs more money O_o ?
  9. There were pictures circulated of the in house V8 running though? to get to a running prototype stage, surely its cheaper to keep going......for me to open my cheque book i need either a HIGHLY modified toyota base or an in house engine. Even the old four banger wasnt 100% original if you recall...but it was so modified it basically was a lotus engine.
  10. My main issue to be honest is that the windows have a pyramid point, they should be flat. would make the esprit concept look much closer to an evolution of the esprit.
  11. I don't mind if it has a Toyota engine because to be honest once lotus hands are done with the the head is unrecognisable, and those who get into the details knows that what matters. But I understand why those new to cars or less mechanically interested would say something like that. Any argument about whether or not db was right or wrong or anywhere in between is irrelevant. A company must be able to balance the books and if it can't then the vision was wrong. And I personally think the Elan concept looked more like a new esprit than the new esprit did. If they took the front half of the new élan and married it to the rear of the new esprit and kept the low side intake of the new Elan It would be a trillion times closer.
  12. Yea and his vision sucked IMHO. The new esprit is an engineering marvel but is brutally ugly, all the the concepts were. I won't be buying one if it comes out as is, from a design point of view alone, it should have been done thus: oh hello mr car designer. Here is the 1989 Stevens shape. Update this shape incrementally as if I were asking you to do it in 1996 or 1997. Then take that shape and incrementally update it again as though I were asking you to do it in 2002 or 2003. Now do a slightly larger revision of the design in 2008 or 2009. Now incrementally update that design for 2015. See what I'm doing here??? Slightly porsche esque design philosophy? And why? Because when the design is already perfect and instant icon in its first iteration you should only ever incrementally improve it. The new esprit has design features that could never appear in an incremental way, only the view from the rear looks correct to me.
  13. Would the 300 sport one have been identical? Would it have actually increased stiffness or simply provided safety to impact?
  14. Any news on the esprit? Is is still lurking about, will it even meet emissions by the time it comes out? I hear the new Ferrari 458 might be TTv6 to meet the new emissions for 2017. 458 replacement I mean
  15. Don't suppose anyone has a pic of a 300 sport with a roll cage??
  16. This was really answered RE the 21 psi front 25 psi rear question. What should it be now with more modern tires? Can someone ask the factory, I can't find an email for them that works.
  17. Just throwing it out there, only the 300 sport had the rear brace the gearbox surround brace correct? If so wouldn't that give the 300 sport vastly better rigidity over all other esprits? Were there ever any incremental chassis improvements in terms of rigidity excluding the 300 sport and/or 350 sport?
  18. always hate to bring up old threads but as of only three months ago this tosser is still at it, apprently making out like he had a hand in the Esprit chassis design. GregLocock (Automotive) 11 Nov 13 20:30 The Lotus figure is correct, if you have the stiffening braces running from the intercooler's radiator duct to the chassis. If you don't have them then knock 20% off that figure. I put the braces in there, for the introduction of the intercooled turbo model. My mechanic Big John fabricated the first set. I don't know if they went in across the board in production, I think so as they had such a positive effect on handling. Basically the issue is that the spine chassis is not using the full width of the car to develop torsional stiffness, and Chapman had decreed after the original Elite's problem with body cracking that the glass fibre tub was to be an unstressed unit. Since he was dead or hiding in South America by the time I was working on the car, and we had a reasonable durability test on pave to check things, we were confident that the GF could be used as a torsional stiffener. If the body is overstressed you'll probably notice gel coat cracking over the front wheels. The effect on handling is profound, with the braces you should get a lot more understeer, it'll need new front bar and shocks, and probably springs. John Miles did the tuning, from memory. Other cars that had surprsingly low torsional stiffnesses in the eighties were the Porsche 911 cabriolet, and some BMWs. Cheers Greg Locock http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=354865
  19. How well does the un16 hold up with normal use with the occasional blast? Life of the car? Refurb at 100,000 miles? I have read they are pretty tough, esp for the 4 cyl applications.
  20. FYI I bought a bonnet for an 87 Stevens and it didn't fit my 89my turbo. They changed the crown of the bonnet slightly.
  21. Thanks guys, how do I remove the rear carpet on the top of the engine bay though without breaking the glue seals? Can't I just rip it off, change the hose then glue it back down?
  22. I now have this issue but it's fixed by turned on the fans with or without aircon so long as the fans are not set to recirculate. Ie ensure they are drawing air from outside. This creates positive cabin pressure which makes me think the source of my problem would be the famous perished fuel vapour hose releasing fumes coming through the seat belt holes?? My shifter gaiter is as new
  23. off the back of my creation of the "Esprit in every colour ever" thread (which failed by the way we are missing SO MANY COLOURS!) I thought it might be cool to feel festive and see if anyone was brave enough to post pictures of their esprit involved in some sort of christmas activity. im thinking....Esprit wearing santa hat.....esprit in snow..........esprit drunk after christmas dinner...............esprit posing with owners wife in santa suit/slip....... .............
