  1. I've been looking and really want one of these. I have found it fits several requirements, one of which is recording for YouTube. Hows the video footage in itself?
  2. It's very sad for all of those involved in Germany, victims and families alike. At least now with this they may find, however unlikely, some solace. I hear what Barry and Ian said on a daily basis. Fighting age males... Those 'children' who are clearly not... Meanwhile there are women fighting from Kurdistan against IS. Certainly begs the question as to what drives them to come here and leave their families behind... The truth is.... awkward. Closing the borders doesn't mean we'll have security, it just means they'll find another way in, normally assisted by nationals who bring them over for financial gain without seeing the bigger picture of what they're doing - because they're selfish and thick. These people are the same that support Britain First in the UK and Neo-Nazi groups in Germany etc. That's a generalisation, but stereotypes exist for a reason. As do traffickers. Basically, our underclass is assisting terrorism. The question is why are these extremists so prevalent at the moment? Terrorism has always been around. Increased media coverage and technology supporting it means we hear about it as it happens instead of after the event. This adds to the feeling that the world is full of mental people trying to kill everyone. We've (NATO, US, UK in varying configurations) done a great deal of damage to the middle east by destroying legitimate regimes that kept the populace in check (Iraq, Libya) however uncouth some of them may be. We've undermined governments and directly supported rebels/terrorists instead of a legitimate government (Libya/Syria) and created a maelstrom of power struggling individuals (Afghanistan) who in reality are just puppets either for terrorist groups or foreign state intelligence. Some countries simply either aren't ready to be overseen by or can't run with westernised democracy - hell most western countries can't. We've killed countless thousands of civilians in bombing runs and accidents, destroyed infrastructure and barely replaced it (Kajaki dam for instance) which won't win hearts and minds - it'll drive them to extremism. One thing that annoys me of politicians is when they speak of precision missiles (Cameron i'm looking at you) - there's no such thing - a sniper is regarded as precision because one bullet generally kills one person. When you're dropping an air launched munition with HE or FRAG tips for instance you're ALWAYS going to get collateral damage - its a big bang and lots of little shit comes out along with a pressure wave that can cause death in itself. All of these areas are now breeding zones for extremism whereby easily influenceable individuals are conned into believing that an invisible deity wants you to kill all the kafir. Over the years the US/UK have directly and indirectly supported terrorism in multiple areas of operation - UK (US in that one), Afghanistan (USSR), Syria to name a few. All with the intent to destabilise the region. There have been reports of the US sending rebels into contacts in Syria from a line of departure with enough ammunition and weapons to fight only a single contact - so they can't do a runner. When they've expended their ammunition, they return for another single contacts worth. Most of the rebel groups that the UK and US are supporting have links to AQ and its elements or fighters previously known to support the aforementioned. Make of that what you will. Some will say we've had a direct hand in what we're now experiencing in Europe. So? Whats my point? The person who killed all those civilians in Germany for his extremist offshoot religion - is now a martyr. Whereas the victims of the attack and their families are going through utter hell. Their cause is successful, we need to change tactics to defeat this threat. You can't destroy religion. Nor can you destroy an ideal. Kinetics (boots on the ground) doesn't work either. Personally, i believe to begin to counter this we need to side with Putin and Assad to assure a bastion in the middle east is maintained - support a legitimate government for once and stop giving weapons and support to 'rebels'. Deal with Assad after. Then the rather impossible task of eliminating an ideal can begin, but with Russia, US and local governance in the mix. Closing and imaginary border won't take even the smallest step to solving anything, correct usage of soft and hard power will. Until our politicians get their heads out of their overpaid and selfish asses that'll never happen. To be brutally honest it's likely to never happen - regardless of Labour, Tory or monster raving loony being in power. As such the democratic populace will suffer. Look at the governments stance on Saudi Arabia - flying in the face of the truth of the 'war' they're fighting, our illustrious PM has stated that the UK fully supports them (mainly because a single export Challenger II costs Saudi in the region of £4,500,000). Boris Jonhson actually said something people agree with him about - they're (the Saudis and us as extension) are fighting proxy wars in the middle east that can only be resolved by correct use of soft and hard power. Meanwhile the Italian police officer will be ordering in his pizza to the office and drinking coffee whilst filling out his eleventy billion reports and our national nambies will be crying that we're deploying armed police to public gatherings as a deterrent to exactly what has just occurred. PS. I've been on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan for a combined length of roughly 3yrs. I've met and spoken with civilians and elders alike. One elder in Afghanistan asked us a the beginning of a Shura "Why are you here, you can't change anything for the good - you bring death with you because your enemies will come to this place". In Iraq we were asked "when are you leaving, because we want to go back to living normally".
  3. Short Ratio 'box indeed. It means comparatively it'll accelerate in 3rd gear and above faster than a standard 'box will (obviously eliminating variables for this example) by having less of a gap between the gear sets - this means it drops you back in the revs higher as you change up (that's how i understand it anyway). A quote from Lotus VSI This really comes into its own on track primarily. Conversely it means when you're cruising on a motorway the SR 'box is at higher RPM and therefore things are noisier. Taken from the the playground Wiki - Evora gearboxes comparing maximum attainable speed in each gear. Gearbox 1 2 3 4 5 6 Standard 37.09mph (40.57mph) 68.60mph (75.03mph) 107.75mph (117.85mph) 152.60mph (166.90mph) 193.77mph (211.94mph) 239.94mph (262.43mph) Close Ratio 37.09mph (40.57mph) 68.60mph (75.03mph) 93.27mph (102.02mph) 120.29mph (131.56mph) 157.86mph (172.66mph) 177.77mph (194.44mph) IPS 38.17mph 66.30mph 88.71mph 125.96mph 176.71mph 207.18mph MY12 cars onwards came with SR 'box fitted as standard. Apparently the media released cars all came with SR 'boxes too - even though most of the launch editions had standard 'boxes. Why the change? Well i've spoken to a race team (one that knows its stuff too) about ratios who say a SR 'box is equivalent to 10bhp over a standard 'box over a lap... My only thoughts is that maybe Lotus felt it suited the Evora better and made it more urgent? There are members on here who have driven both in anger and also agree with that sentiment. I probably wouldn't want to get a standard box as i do a minimum of two track days a year and can happily live with a louder cruise for less of a gap between gears. "Better" depends on the drivers requirements... Neither really upsets the Evoras character and an adjustment of driving style can possibly overcome the standard 'box ratios on track.
  4. True but it is indicative of the issue with PR. On the plus side tonight i have convinced a guy i know to buy an Elise...
  5. Agreed. I keep getting told I have a Lotus Elise... There are two others that are around Colchester that I see often and even if I'm in mine I always stare and listen to the V6.
  6. I don't know what i did but for some reason the music track wasn't faded out as intended due to the placement of a second detached music :/ I've updated the video anyway as i have footage from Silverstone GP of the clutch bearing noise when pulling away. Typically today its cold and mine doesn't do it when its cold.
  7. Yep - its similar to that across the cars i've listened to on idle MY2010-2013 (early). As with everything lotus its never exactly the same but noticeable when listening for it.
  8. OP, If it sounds like this: It's normal Something to do with the internal components (bearings etc) having a minuscule amount of play.
  9. Mine wasn't even advertised as having the SR gear train... just pure luck to be frank.
  10. Forgot to say in addition that the standard box feels a little icky on track but is certainly not a massive detraction having the standard gear train - especially if you don't do track work. I've chucked up a geartrain noise video whilst mine was noisy tonight...
  11. Guys, Thank you - and Jay - most definitely. Bibs, If there's anything you want to use officially just say and i'll be happy to release it for the good and benefit of the forum Hi Joe, So the images below are screenshots from VSI which is a Lotus repository that you usually have to pay for access to, but if you know the right search wildcards can bring up FOC with google. The gear ratio table shows the specific ratios in use in each individual gear. Without breaking down into decimal numbers, if you multiply the optional figure for 6th gear by 2.5 (i.e 2500rpm) you'll see you will get 67ish mph. If you multiply the standard figure for 6th gear by 2 (i.e 2000rpm) you get 72mph. In the real world that means if you're sitting at 70mph on the motorway you'll be doing 2000rpm on the standard gear train and 2500-2600rpm on the optional gear train. The 2nd option to look for is under the airbox. There are sections on the gearbox where the transmission cables join whereby the gearbox model is stamped in. If it's missing this stamp then it's not conclusive. Some weren't stamped. You could use the transmission number to search via a Lotus dealer to confirm it - but again... some weren't updated in their electronic details.
  12. So... technically that's my first year of Evora ownership.. I've put together a video explaining the year including the issues with my windows and gearbox that could be potential fixes for others! I'm thinking of doing little how to's and video overviews as and when too. Bibs, I chucked it onto the Tribe too.
  13. 3" is what most turbocharged engines use in other marques as the exhaust gas flows freely and makes it easier to produce 'free' power... Due to the fact that there's no scavenging required to operate the Supercharger i'd assume it's something to do with that - the timing of the exhaust pulses being the key one - even changing a tail pipe beauty section to longer or shorter can affect output (exhaust length tuning), let alone wadding or 'removable silencers' that you see employed on track days - the heat too is a killer...
  14. Update: I have the car back... I dropped it in to Lotus Silverstone on Tuesday with a small list of minor boggles to rectify along with the gearbox problem this thread is based on. The list: 1. Drivers window impacting on roof, seal requires renewal, window requires adjusting. 2. Bump/Rebound rumble noise. 3. Gearbox damper mount cracked and oil leak. Drivers Window: The regulator itself is a fairly mental design that seems to allow quite a lot of flex in the operating range which is apparently where mine keeps messing up (4th time lucky). Screen Shot 2016-11-17 at 20.18.42 by Simon Cox, on Flickr As you can see its literally just clamped in the middle and the second it fouls it'll shift the glass. Mines been balanced differently so that it intentionally fouls as to push the glass into the correct position. I guess it's just the fact that the cars are all somewhat different due to their hand built nature. Bump/Rebound: Those eagle eyed guys and girls amongst you will realise that this is also a recurring problem i've had - probably because of the track work. Upon inspection the front ARB was loose as S E L O C S morals due to perished drop link bushings. Apparently the Evora is fairly hard on its drop link bushings on track which is why although i had them replaced in April, two track days later (and 6000mi) they're fairly buggered. Matt said theres a clear material loss (approx 0.1mm) on one side of the ARB as the drop link has rattled away and scraped at the ARB. This means theres a possibility that it'll go again due to weakness but if it does it'll just end up being replaced as a full ARB, drop link and mounts set. The Gearbox oil leak and crack on clutch damper mount Ok... so remember that crack? It wasn't a crack!! The whole lug that secured that part of the clutch damper bracket had sheared off, when Ben undid the bolt the piece just fell away leaving an intact main casing behind. So that's where that sits currently, missing a third lug and securing bolt - no great shakes. Probably caused by the bolt being in wrong and harmonics... The explanation for the oil leak is a little difficult as i can't find a picture of a dressed EA60 'box to show the offending part in question. Its a small 4cm (l) x 3cm (h) black 'tap' about 10cm above the clutch damper bracket. Inside the tap is a plastic insert with an o ring on the inner lip. You press the top down and it pops out for all and sundry to glance at its awesomeness. Essentially its like a sender slot used by Toyota but not by Lotus so they've blocked it up. The O ring had utterly perished and was allowing seepage - resulting in the fairly hefty (in looks apparently as the levels were fine) oil loss and coating on the under tray and 'box components. So that was replaced with a new item and road tested for 15 miles - no leaks. Finally, I had emailed Aimee a photoshop image i'd prepped a few weeks back and asked if she could get it made up for me... maybe a bit marmite but hey... Evora Lotus Sport by Simon Cox, on Flickr It successfully keeps the low lying sun off my eyes and has a slight unintended consequence of making it totally impossible to see traffic lights I'm stopped at.. I used the radio start up image and about 30 mins of photoshop jiggery pokery to make it how i wanted it. Aimee has the image attached to my email so if anyone wants one I'm more than happy for it to be passed around. So that's it... a fairly quiet resolution to what could have been a Christmas ruiner! Big thanks to the team at Lotus Silverstone for a great service! ....speaking of services... it's almost that time...
  15. "Know your smells" has never been more appropriate tbh.. Seems a few similarities between a Tank and Evora...
  16. Thanks guys, as mentioned it's in to silverstone wb. 14th November. I'll keep this updated. Jay, very suspicious indeed as it is the exact same piece.
  17. Apologies you are indeed bang on - been a long week already and its clearly stopped my brain working! Bibs - could you do the honours of doing a delete/insert on the title please?
  18. Speak to Lotus Silverstone. 6k on my tyres inclusive of Silverstone GP (Trackday thrown in by them) and still looking fine (6mm across the tread on the fronts/6-7mm across on the rears). Their geo seems spotty dog. I don't have the paperwork to hand to post a picture of it, if i get time tomorrow i will post it up.
  19. So.. As the title depicts i have a crack in the gearbox casing. Pulled in at home after driving a few hours from work and noticed when i got my bags out of the boot there was a rich smell with the underlying tone of piss. Having worked on armour i thought it smelt like oil extreme pressure (OEP220 used in final drives on tanks). Phoned Lotus Silverstone and was asked to check the boot as it might be a damp smell coming from a flooded boot... After checking the boot and finding it was dry i was offered a chance to check it out at my friends workshop. He is a mech' for a pair of V8 Vantage GT4, an N24 and a DBRS9 race car. Undid the bolts to the under tray and found this in 35 seconds: Oil on damper by Simon Cox, on Flickr Crack on bellhousing by Simon Cox, on Flickr The first picture shows the oil clearly in place on the clutch damper, subframe and those black/silver corrugated lines as well as directly underneath the 'box in a pool - the second after it was all cleaned down to search for the source. The under tray had a significant film of oil about 1mm deep along the right hand side, also down the subframe (pictured) as it had crept (from looking underneath). Called Aimee at Lotus Silverstone pretty much immediately and booked it in for an inspection alongside getting my window readjusted (for the 4th time as it keeps messing up and my drivers sill is getting soaked every time its wet), the drivers door locking pin adjusted (keeps striking the door card and not going up) and replacement of the sill seal as the window has chewed it pretty badly. I have the warranty with the car from Lotus Silverstone with AutoProtect and i'm hoping its covered as quite frankly i've covered only 6000mi since 31 Mar when i picked the car up on 66,000mi (72,000 now) and don't expect a failed item of this severity (especially a cast item) on any vehicle in that time. Anyway - i've searched the forums and couldn't find anything here on it so i've posted and shall keep you all informed of the progress! I'm sure Lotus Silverstone will see me through as they're not the best Lotus dealer in the UK by luck... A little shot of my friends cars with mine the only positive to draw from that day! GT by Simon Cox, on Flickr
  20. WOW - that doesn't look right?!? Sure i can't see the crash bar at all through the front grille... Also it looks high... hats off though....
  21. My map was done there, popped up a few times to discuss what the map parameters were - fairly nice guys.
  22. I put a pack of crisps in there as a joke... Wasn't a joke when i forgot about them for a few weeks and they blew in the heat the other day..
