  1. If she runs too cold you won't get full boost so I doubt the thermostat has been removed. Cheers, John W
  2. I believe synthetic oil has a substance in it which causes the seals to swell & so reduces leaks. I've certainly experienced this whenever I've put synthetic in transmissions. Cheers, John W
  3. Have you compressed the spring with compressors?? Cheers, John W
  4. It's nothing to do with the synchro which is only used when changing gear. It's probably the detent spring/mechanism which holds it in the selected gear. I do agree the rebuild time is fast approaching. Cheers, John W

    Esprit Brochures

I have a pack of Lotus & Esprit & other pictures from a factory visit by the Lotus Driver's club in June '94. They're free to anyone who would like them, just email me your name & address. Cheers, John W
  6. After a Europa Special followed by four esprits (two S3s, a Stevens Turbo & an S4s) I bought a Boxster S & while it doesn't have the raw power of the S4s it is nicer, easier to drive. Cheers, John W
  7. There's no way you can remove & replace the engine & expect it to run smoothly without rebalancing the carbs. Also, you stated "Little to no difference to idle when plug leads are pulled from either cylinder fed by carb near flywheel." I wouldn't expect both idle jets in number one carb to get blocked at the same time, but if they were, when driving you'd notice a definate performance increase when she moved from the idle to the main jet circuit. Balance the carbs before you start dismanteling them, it only takes a few minutes & will eliminate or prove my theory. Cheers, John W
  8. That's an aftermarket pump, probably fitted at the same time as the air filters. It sounds as if there's a problem with it & it's shorting which is causing the wires to get hot as there's no fuse in the supply. I'd rip it out, find the original SU pump & get it replaced. Cheers, John W
  9. If the carbs are out of balance then that would produce the symptoms you describe as at idle you'd only be running on the first carb. I'd check the balance first if I were you. Cheers, John W
  10. Many congrats Ed I remember your Europa Special from Lotus Driver's Club track days at Wellsbourne, have you still got the picture I took of you?? Cheers, John W
  11. To cure your cooling problems, have you considered fitting a smaller waterpump pulley to spin the pump faster??? Cheers, John W PS Amazing work, keep it up.
  12. This would be worth buying for the mirrors http://www.coys.co.uk/auctions/lot.php?auc...75&id=55803 Cheers, John W
  13. If you're interested you can read all you'll ever want to know about oil here. http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html Also, when you're changing the oil, if you leave it over night before removing the filter you'll find, when you do remove it, that it will be empty and so not make a mess on the floor. Cheers, John W
  14. The air corrector jets sizes are: std 200 HC 180 Hope this helps Cheers, JW
  15. Hi Guys, What's the cost of a straight "A" service on an S4s these days from both dealers & specialists in the UK? Can you give me an idea of what people are paying? Thanks
  16. Yep, loads of times. They're a good basic way of setting the idle mixture. You'll need a mirror to see it properly when using it on an Esprit. Don't know where you're based, but in the UK Halfords sells them for around
