Calling All S1/S2/Pre '85 S3 Owners Worldwide!

Please count me in as very interested and likely to buy for the front at the very least. My car already has a modified rear with upper link, so not sure how any factory upgrade for the rear would work with this setup.

I agree with Gordon's comments. His experience with aftermarket dampers comes as no surprise. I will buy a set of Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers from Lotus (assuming the price is not exorbitant) if they eventually become available. Hopefully Lotus won't base their decision simply on a financial payback calculation but will also consider the plight of owners of the older Esprits who want to get their cars handling like a proper Lotus again.

The unfortunate thing in all of these types of deals is that those who develop new parts seem to want to see them all sold on round one. The problem with that thinking is that all the thousand or more remaining S1/S2's are in various states of tune and restoration and not everyone is looking to overhaul their entire suspension at the same time. They all will eventually wear, however, and the long term potential for sales will remain as long as the models are still on the road. As both a factory and parts stockist, I hope Lotus has both the foresight and financial wherewithal to remain proactive with older models in this regard. (not to mention the fact that I AM ready to overhaul my S1 suspension right now! :yes)

Eric

To be fair the initial post clearly states that they are not looking for a commitment to buy, just a statement of interest. I'm very dissapointed at the number of responses here. I totally agree with you but this Forum can be a double edged sword.

If I were the factory and I noticed a post like this, on the leading Esprit Forum in the world, could only generate approx 20 responses, it wouldn't make me want to take the gamble on future sales. This has also been cross posted on LEW and the Yahoo S1/S2/S3 Group, so there's no excuse for lack of publicity.

Mat

Due to the lack of numbers and costs of development for the new Bilstein/Eibach suspension upgrade Lotus cannot realistically carry on the development of this upgrade unless there are significant numbers of people interested in purchasing. If only 10/20 people wish to follow this route then Lotus will lose a significant amount of money on the project which, as nice as they are, they can't justify. If 75+ people were interested, there's a lot more chance of us getting this off the ground.

Please post below if you would purchase this suspension if it were available. It's not a contract to buy, but we do need a commitment to numbers so a good case can be made to Lotus to make this an economically good idea for them.

Hi,

I am very interested. I hope other modificatios be available from Lotus in order to improve the weak gearbox of my 1978 Lotus Esprit S2.....

I appologize since I think I am partially to blame as to the lack of replies. Recent job promotions, grad school work, and a long distance relationship have kept me from the board. That being said, I am more than interested in purchasing such a setup for my S2. I am even willing to place a deposit or prepay in order to receive a factory Lotus-tuned setup. This is a unique opportunity for the ultimate suspension for our beloved cars and I can't imagine having it pass up. If there is anything I can do to better the chances, please let me know

Welcome back, Shah. Thought we had upset you.

Is your car fixed yet?

Thanks for the welcome! Nah I was just caught in the daily grind and what not. You know how that can get. I tried to make it to the board as much as possible but, looking back, I realize that it wasn't very often at all. I apologize if I missed anything important or any meets in the CA area. The car was fixed but, seeing that I had a bit of down time, I decided to embark on a few other small projects and its back off the road again. Hopefully I can get that sorted soon since I think I'm going back next year for a third degree.

Since that was a bit off topic, you guys think there is anything we can do to help lotus buy into the idea for these suspension pieces? I'm dying to get some high quality stuff for the S2...

  • 4 weeks later...

So, what's the verdict then - will they be going ahead? I'm going to be in a position very shortly where I need to buy my suspension components and don't want to buy some only to find out two days later that Lotus now have an offering :)

I'm amazed that we haven't raised 75 responses to this thread. I would have thought that all the S1 and S2 owners would be all over it.

Come on, people! :)

You are not committing to buying the new suspension bits but you know you will need them sometime in the future.

What do you think of the idea of trying to get some buy-in from vendors, both U.S. and U.K.? I would imagine that there are a few hundred S1/S2 owners world wide who buy from SJ, Paul Matty, R.D. Enterprises, and JAE but who never look to internet forums or yahoogroups. These vendors could probably sell a few dozen sets over a few years' time, I would think . . . ?

If anyone on here from the States is active or recognized in Lotus Ltd., could you contact the reMarque editor to put something in the newsletter? . . . and the webmaster to put something on the web site?

Same with U.K. Lotus clubs?

Tony I agree. There are a load of people on the Yahoo S1/S2/S3 list who don't visit here. I cross posted but got little response. It's almost as if they think it's a scam coming from our forum, whereas if it were coming from Dave Bean, JCW or JAE they'd jump on it no probs (hope I've got their names correct?). Don't suppose you or Trevor could have a word with the US specialists?
