So I Bought An Apple Iphone Today ....

Just traded up to a 16Gb 3Gs and have to say compared to my original iphone, this thing is fast! I'm planning on dismantling the original iphone to see if it's fixable (seen the screens on ebay and instructions on youtube!). I paid $199 with a two year "deal with the devil" AT&T for the 3Gs.

Yes, and Redsn0w (follow the link in my last post) is the way to go and its free. There are a lot of people charging to jailbreak your phone but they all use Redsn0w. Don't worry about yellowsn0w and ultrasn0w as they are to unlock the carrier but you need to use RedSn0w to jailbreak the phone first anyway. Redsn0w torrents are hosted on Pirate bay.

Paul

Take a look at iFix it, they sell screens / spares and have good guides to dismantle the phone.

Hmm the thing I hate most about Iphone now is knowing what apps to get.

What are your top apps then ?

I've just re-skinned by phone (it's really sad, I done it myself) but noticed also how much 'chatter' either the 3.0software has or one of the jailbreak functions does - my phone is always gsm'ing (not wifi or 3G becuase I have selectivly turned them off - it's on the phone radio talking to the cell all the time....really annoying near the computer (dardardardikdardardikadar) but also draining the battery.

Here's a screeny of the skin - challenges Owen on the geeky scale :animier:

3743114992_912db3fa78.jpg

Yes it's a trekky one and I did copy the idea but I drew most of it myself and it doesn't work on transparent icons so the numbers above the dock animate !

OK I realise 1/2 of you wont want to be my friend now LOL but it is amazing (and I'm not even a treky !!! honest)

The real hit for me is if I could get it to look like Ziggy from quantum Leap and have the re-stuffle sound like that when Al slaps it LOL

Oooooww !

Freak.

To stop the chatter, put it on a piece of silver foil. I've wrapped a piece of iPhone sized cardboard in a layer as it was driving me mental. The other option is to put a ferrite bead (easy & cheap) on your speaker wires close to the actual speaker which I'll be doing next time I pass a Tandy/Maplin and buy a couple. (Ferrite beads are in the small round cylinders you often see on power/USB cables, they suppress high frequency noise on electrical circuits.)

LOL.

We've got loads of beads at work in the electronics store, I'll have a look see if there are some in size (we do RF and stuff there too).

Did it used to do this before 3.0 ? I dont think it did, it's terrible - I know people have been upset with the battery life, now I can see why - if it's chattering all the time I'll drain it very quickly.

Oh and you haven't heard the best bit - when the 20% battery warning comes up it sasy "energy reserves reaching critical stage" LOL soooooo geeky, might not have a g/f by this time next week !

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with some expanding foam...

to stop the chatter...turn it off till you want to use it..also saves the battery

  • 2 weeks later...

stemming from my response earlier in this thread, I decided to document the usage of my iphone and how it helps me as an Esprit owner for going to and from a car show today.

alarm clock woke me up on time to get ready:

img0071.png

checked the calendar to see when the car show was starting:

img0085.png

went to local club message board to check location address and check any last updates:

img0091u.pngimg0092.png

put address in google maps and got directions:

img0094.png

found closest gas station and got directions using google maps:

img0095.png

checked weather to make sure it wasnt going to rain on my baby:

img0098.pngimg0099.pngimg0100c.png

did a quick facebook check to see what friends are going to meet up:

img0101l.png

quick check of traffic and it was off to the gas station:

img0104.png

filled up with gas and then got directions to perkins where club was eating at before the show:

img0105.png

arrived at perkins and took pictures of the delorean clubs cars that were alerady there:

img0112u.jpg

got directions from perkins to the show:

img0111.png

arrived at show and parked with my delorean friends and took a picture:

left show later and got food (axels wasnt actually what i decided on):

img0115y.png

played some lotus turbo challenge while waiting for food:

img0117.pngimg0118.png

listened to good "driving fast" music on the way home:

img0119.png

checked the part number of a part i had discussed with someone at the show in the pdf lotus parts manual:

LOL sweet - does Lotus challenge still have the funky music ?

To think I used to play the 1st Esprit challenge with my mate back in secondary school on the Commadore Amiga 500s there ALL the time - it was one of the best racing games at that time.

We used to slobber over the Esprit's good looks and to think I'd ever end up owning and driving one...sorry....bit emotional there....sniff.... :robo:

hahah im not sure about the music, i always play without it... there is no frame limiter on this version of the sega emulator so everything runs almost double speed sometimes and there is audio jumps all the and the music seems quite sped up.... .should be fixed in the next release though...

Oh boy that takes me back.... :robo:

(I think the musics quite cool as well)

PS thought Turbo challenge 1 was the better game - esp split screen 2 player :)

How do you jailbreakers out there cope with the firmware updates ? v3.0.1 wiped all my jailbroken bits, now I have to re-install again from scratch.

Great piece of kit, great phone, great potential - totally ruined by Apple.

Dont get me wrong I'd have no other set on the market atm (apart from the iPhone 3GS) but Apples continual denial of letting anything moderatly useful onto the iPhone winds me the hell up.

Catagories on Cydia is a prime example - suuuuperrrb app, one that I garauntee Apple wont let you have through their source. SB Settings is another.

jailbreak with redsnow should still work on the 3.0.1 update.... when the next update comes along, be sure you click "dont update" and hold off until one of the developers tools is confirmed to work on the newest firmware update...

there is something available through cydia that lets you keep all your settings backed up and all your programs backed up or something along those lines so you dont have to do a complete re-do when you re-jailbreak

dont know what its called though...

Jon

You might not loose everything, depends where its stored on the phone, the OS partition on the phone gets wiped with new firmware so you will loose anything stored there.

There is also the PwnageTool which is MAC only but this can create a custom/pre jailbroken ISPW (firmware) file which you then 'trick' iTunes into installing for you. But I have not heard of a version for V3.01, only V3 and unlike RedSn0w I am not sure it will be compatible.
