Engine Coolant Light ..::::::(((.........

Take a pic of the dashboard lights as well when they fault - if it is the screenwash bottle I doubt you'd be the only one to come stuck with it !

Dear All

Today I have fitted a TURBO GAUGE (I have bought a standard model on ebay), and I have connected in the hose that go to the wastegate......I have put it with the long tube on the car by the grill of bonnet and I have tested the pressure for see the turbo work. and then:

The car have always up to 3.500rpm a pressure of 0,5 bar, it show me or 0 when I not accelerate or from 0 to max 0,5!!!!!!!!! he not go up to 0,8/1/1,1 bar.....the light today was always open so was impossible to check it with the light off, so my car not have the over boost!!!!!! AND THE CHIP 10 CAN NOT WORK TO 1,1 BAR!!!!!!......what you think???

Is normaly that the car have only up to 0,5BAR and however when he go up to 1,1!!!!!!!!!!!

about my test that you have tell me, I will check it in the next week directly to the Lotus, I leave the car to Rome next week for this check and I will go to UK for holidays....when go back I hope that have a car that work all

thanks

Alessandro

This has alwasy been an issue with your car.

It never seemed to boost correctly or over 0.65 bar

Remember we checked the overboost solenoid and found out it ws fine ?

The car has 2 stages of boost, they are refered to as :

1) Mechanical boost

2) Overboost

1) Mechanical is the pressure rating of the wastegate actuator capsule....it is (or at least should be set to) 0.65 bar.

Once this is achieved the actuator allows the wastegate to open and regulates the pressure the turbo is generating.

2) Overboost works by the wastegate solenoid bleeding off air pressure to the wastegate capsule. This allows higher boost because the solenoid creates a leak in the actuator line.

Mechanical boost is always the base line - right from the instant you start the car the turbo will boost to 0.65 bar when you drive it hard.

Overboost only comes into play when the temperature is up on the car and you are giving it a lot of accelerator.

A GT3 should boost to 0.65 bar on mechanical and about 0.9-1bar maximum on standard (ie factory chip) overboost.

The #10 chip will allow over 1 bar BUT only if the circumstances are right to allow it to happen.

Hopefully they'll look into this in Rome but the car was never really achieving overboost, you could see that from the MAP reading and the fact the wastegate DC was never in use on a freescan log, and that was why you could never feel the turbo 'kick'.

Alessandro,

What you are experiencing here is the mechanical base boost setting. Actually it should be 0.65-0.7 bar not only 0.5 bar ...

When there are fault codes store in the ECU (and I'm sure you have a lot of them !) then its very likely that the ECU limits max. boost to the mechanical base setting.

First you have to sort out ALL the problems your engine has. When everything is rectified and no fault code and no CEL-light comes on anymore than it is time to ask for more boost.

Believe me Alessandro, your car is in serious need of a real specialist. I strongly hope that there are Esprit specialists in Italy who know what they are doing.

Cheers

Marcus

So I can explain to adjust a correct pressure of wastegate to 0.65 BAR and see why the car not have the overboost???

yes I understand the problem of specialist and mechanich, but I will go to a Lotus dealer, it work on esprit and I think that understand my problems and adjust the turbo work

thanks

They need to investigate why the car isn't over boosting, which might well be related to any temperature issues.

Your boost gauge might not be 100% correct (calibrated), and it might show a little out - use it as a guide only. My factory boost guage (the older GT3's like mine have a different dashboard to the laters ones like yours) is not 100% correct but I use freescan to make checks every few months to ensure the boost is correct.

What they will do is to take a calibrated compressor and attach it to the wastegate capsule and test it's operation and possibly adjust it from there.

I have a little guess that the overboost issue is something to do with the temperature / coolant issue with the car.

The two are related as one of the requesits for overboost is to do with temperature.

When i looked at the freescan report the ECU was not even issuing overboost 'commands' (ie electrical pulses to the solenoid) which was a little strange.

I am convinced there is an electrical issue with the car, but without being there to look at it and run tests it's going to be nigh on impossible to solve. Taking it to a specialist in Rome is the best idea - hopefully they can sort it out.

When you get to UK I'll show you my car and freescan so you'll know what to expect.
