they did not make V8s in 1987 and the dash is the revised modern one from about 1997 I think. So the details dont make sense.

Claims this "Yes this is a 1987 registered car, it is a 1996 car and yes it has had fitted a 1998 interior. It is complelty HPI clear, I have no idea as to the what when how of this."

Sound like bollocks to me.

I think he means that the reg is a 1987 ie its a D reg plate on the car. But its actually a 1996 model fitted with a 1998 interior.

I saw that a couple of weeks back but apart from all the things listed above the part:

"Mileage is recorded at 17014, no idea if this is acurate at all."

was enough to make me run a mile.... in other words you have no idea what you are buying and he doesnt claim anything otherwise.

Could be genuine but im certainly not man enough to risk it!!

If it's a '96 car registered in '87 then it must be a re-body, but not done correctly, since the body and engine would retain the '96 reg.

It could be a "ringer", a stolen car give a false idetity, although I doubt Nick would do that, but a previous owner may have done.

Has anybody asked for the chassis number of the body?

I know when I looked at the Turbo Nick said it had a '92 engine, but turned out to be an'84 engine converted to 93 spec, so his description may be a bit off.

Nick is a member on here and is well known for buying and selling esprits and parts. Never dealt with him myself but from what I've seen hes very straightforward and brutally honest with his descriptions.

Would agree this car has a bit of a confused identity, but its a lot of car for 12k.

Hi Paul,

Where abouts do you live? Are you in UK or US?

This Esprit you are enquiring about is not the one for you. There's plenty of Esprits for sale out there. Stocks Coackworks are selling one that's needs a clutch going cheap.

As far as mileage goes...... thats just the mileage of the donor interior i'd guess....

If you want a low mileage car I can sell you one of mine which has only 3 genuine miles on the clock... Cars done A LOT more....!!!! LOL (New speedo)

The seller has asked us not to discuss it on the forum though in the add i think....

Make of it what you want, always buy with your eyes wide open...!!!!

I've bought quite a few Lotus parts off the guy before. He seems to be a Lotus Specialist when it come to selling cars and parts and he seems to get his hands on the weirdest stuff. Honest guy.

Best to go and look at the car.

Quite simply he just sells Lotus cars and parts - nothing more / nothing less.

I'll put my hand up and defend Nick.

I have also bought a few bits from him, very down to earth guy.

If you are interested in the car then give him a call, he is pretty resonable when describing his stuff, or better still go and look at it.

Nick's cars are very rarely minters, I don't know where the hell he digs them up from, but he is pretty honest when you talk to him about the cars he sells.

If you do your research first (which you should do with any major purchase) and actually go and look at it (with possibly an inspection as well) then it is probably a good project car. Knowing that it will probably have some issues I reckon it is priced realistically.

If you think is is going to be pristine for

Easy now lads!

Righty then, I'm from Warington (UK) currently own an Elise S2 ST  and I'm quite handy with the spanners (though not to the levels of some on here  ) I agree with the above comments and wasn't expecting an immaculate example V8, with 1987 plates and 17,000miles on it. I just wondered if anyone knew of it's past/who built it etc (I know it's a long shot but usually someone in the Lotus community does  )

I've always wanted an Esprit (I came very close last year but then went back into Elise ownership) I do like the turbo'd 4's but really have always wanted a V8. I was planning on looking at it from a trackday/road POV with minimal comforts and little weight (thus chopping about an immaculate V8 SE etc would be a shame.)

Thanks for all the reply's BTW :yes

Dave do you post on NORLOG/are you going to Oulton for the Goldcup on Sunday/Monday?

Just out of interest is there any way of telling if the early V8 has had the clutch/flywheel and liner issue sorted?

Oh sloblocks I've just realised that my profile is way out of date :w00t:

Edited as my grammer degrades by the day!

If it were my money, I'd not even consider this car I'm afraid. Personal opinion is that it shouldn't even be on the road.

Then conversely, if I looked at all the chassis numbers, tell tale bits of body work, HPI reports etc and it all checked out, I would consider it for myself (anybody want a TE & an S3?).

I sold an old 911 Carerra, the guy who bought it was convinced it was a cloned car, "it's never been silver" (original colour), but eventually he accepted it was originally silver, and when the replacement front floor etc were fitted the whole car had been sprayed blue. that meant they were never silver, so it took at lot of searchingt o find a bit of the car , hidden from normal view where the very good blue paint job hadn't reached.

Moral of the tale.

Don't assume it's bad, but keep it in mind.

When I looked at the TE, Nick could have been there earlier, warmed it up, made it seem better then it was, but he didn't. He and I turned up to the car, and he moved it from the resting place, fitted a battery etc, if it was knackered, it would have been apparent, and Nick would have admitted it. If's a t*rd he'l not try and polish it, he'll tell you it's a t*rd.

I've sent Nick an email asking about this car and I am also in touch with the factory to find out more about it's history.

This is a 1987 registered car. Lotus did not make this MY car in 1987, period. They didn't make the V8 that's in this car, period. Thompson has not even thought about the redesign that this car shows until many years after this car was 'manufactured' according to it's history.

If you wish to pursue a purchase of this car then be in on your own head and wallet. My advice to you would be to hold off until we know more about it.

Bibs,

When I looked at the advert I'd assumed that the 1987 was a typo, as it looks to me like a 1997 car. I'm aware of a 1996 V8 that had the 1998 interior (was a directors car). What is certain is that that car was not built in 1987 for all the reasons given below.

Regards,

Peter.

Bibs, thanks for taking the time to do this. I was just interested in whether someone from this board had built it etc but I have taken all your points onboard and I think I'll wait for a straight one to appear within my price range. Again thanks to everyone for the overwhelming response to this question and Bibs if you do findout the history let me know as I'm intregued now
