SETTING TIMING

Is there a way to adjust the timing? Or is set by the computer? If so what should it be, at idle?

Do you use a regular timing light?

No way to set the timing, its done by the ECU.

Cheers

Why do you ask? Are you having issues? Perhaps the timing belt has slipped a tooth?!

Still have a little bit of un smooth idle.

I remember you said it may be fuel injectors, just wanted to rule out everything else.

Unsmooth idling .... he ...

could be almost everything:

- spark plugs

- HT-leads

- ignition module

- chip/software (the old MY89-90 SE software is not the smoothest)

- IAC-valve (lost track or misadjusted minimum-air-rate-screw)

- primary injectors

- timing belt (loose or 1 jumped tooth)

- faulty sensor (MAT, IAC or coolant-temp-sensor)

...

Have you hooked up freescan and checked the sensors and the IAC, yet ?

Cheers

No free scan, but I plan on getting a cable, just keeps going to the back burner.......

New plugs

New wires

New tps

New O2 sensor

New air filter, these items made a big improvement.

Cleaned the iac valve

Ran some techron, all small improvements,

Just at 97% now, need that 100%, but then again I am a perfectionist. Car runs great otherwise.

You can 'double check' the timing I think, because there are two dots on the cam pulleys that line up with each other when at TDC (I think.. someone may need to correct me on this!)

So, if your belt has slipped it'll be easy to spot as the won't line up correctly.

Can you see these dots at the top? Bump the engine until there lined up, or not?

yes they can be seen between the cam towers. Turn your engine over with a wrench from underneath though... bumping the engine will only get you close to tdc... I highly doubt you'll ever get it bang on by starter bumping.

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..
